Let me start by saying that I've been volunteering with Bearings' youth drop-in after school program for the last couple of months. I'm blown away by the program and the self confidence + self efficacy with which it equips youth through young adults. Their program is a true mentorship/apprenticeship that encourages children and teens to work and learn independently with gentle guidance. It helps the participants set clear, attainable goals, and gives them something positive to work towards. As they learn the skills of bicycle building and repairing, they are earning their own bike! The program overflows into a teen program that gives teens and young adults real paid work experiences.
I'd been shopping around for a bike that could handle pavement plus the gravel most Atlanta streets + Beltline connections harbor. Y'all. New bikes are $$$! Plus, I was looking for something with a more vintage look. I knew that the the retail space of Bearings helps fund the youth programs, so I popped in. Some of the shop techs are graduates from their youth programs, and everyone there was polite, knowledgeable, and tolerant of my over excitement. Andrew let my peruse their warehouse catalog of donated bikes, and I found a gem of a vintage mixte frame that the shop refurbished into my dream bike. It's seriously perfect. They took great care in checking in to make sure I was happy with tweaks and details. I also could tell it meant quite a bit to the shop to see how happy I was with the work! So, we kept a bike out of a landfill and gave it new life. I saved HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS of dollars. I have a bike super unique to me that won't slide out from under me in a gravel patch. And, the purchase helped fund programming that I promise is making a difference, y'all. If one of the shop techs looks like a seventeen year old, then they probably are. Know that they're learning, have the great guidance of seasoned bicycle technicians, and will take amazing care of you and your ride. Sorry this review is a novel, but I can't say enough about my positive experience. So, this is actually...
Read moreThis shop was recommended via another bike store. I called before hand to let the shop know that I would be stopping in. When I arrived I was greeted in an unfriendly way. It seems this shop has not figured out how to operate professionally during the pandemic. I was immediately told to step outside when I entered the store due to COVID-19 restrictions. I waited for the salesman/mechanic to come attend to my inquiry. He asked, what I wanted and I said to buy a bike. He then asked, "how tall are you?" and said that he will bring out options for me. He then had another associate bring out 3 bikes that he assumed I would like. There wasn't any engagement on their part about what type of bike I was looking or if I anything in mind. The associate basically said this is what they feel like fits me and it's all they have at the moment. Which is untrue. He then stated that they have a ton of bikes in the shed out back yet he had no idea how I could have access to them. I was puzzled. I then articulated what I was looking for and the associate had no solutions. There wasn't any visual catalogue of what this shop is offering. Quite frankly, they did not care to meet my needs or hear about what I was looking for. The associate then recommended I visit another store because his patience was dwindling, which was all of 15 minutes are so. I was excited to get a bike however this poor customer experience made me look for a bike on craigslist instead. Beautifully designed store. Great curbside appeal. Very poor...
Read moreHi, my name is Khepera and I want to write an extremely honest review: Bearings Bike Works has a really great program for kids 6-17. It is amazing because i have seen how it keeps kids off the streets by giving them a supportive community! There is even a teen internship program for kids starting at age 15, a Mountain Biking team for High schoolers, and even job opportunities for young adults. This place is really awesome, as it fosters a safe place for children. The owner and all the employees are sooo cool and I love this place! This is also speaking for my 4 younger siblings and friends who go there! I would give 100 stars if I could. Sign your...
