Historic Herndon Home Museum — Attraction in Atlanta

The Women’s League of the Atlanta Black Chambers’ hosted our afternoon tea event at the Herndon Home. We could not think of a better venue to discuss black wealth than the home of Alonzo Herndon, Atlanta’s first black millionaire. We were so excited that the Herndon Home opened their doors for us to have a memorable experience. The staff exuded excellence in their working with us in planning and in the execution of the event. From enslaved to Georgia first Black millionaire. The Historic Herndon Home Mansion was built in 1910 by Alonzo Herndon wife Adrianne. Adrienne Herndon,WEB DuBois, and Mr. Towns were Altanta College first Black College professors, Adrianne Herndon was Atlanta College first Black female college professor. Adrienne died in 1910 of Addison disease. With the new Dome in the background and development slowly encroaching on this house it easily displays the displacement that Atlanta’s African American community is dealing with. Once the most affluent areas of Black Wealth in the city since the Sweet Auburn district, today everything around it has begun deteriorating and has been purchased by outside developers and other communities.
