Went on a Friday afternoon with my wife. The tour and questions took a little more than an hour but we were going at a slow pace (as we had many questions) The staff volunteer was very welcoming and talked to us about the property before the tour. The tour was very casual with a lot of history of the property and the occupants. The staff member answered all questions and clarified things we did not understand.
It's a beautiful property and worth a visit for an hour or slightly longer. There is repair work occurring on the property which I would say added to the value of the tour. We got to see behind the plaster walls and see the construction of the walls at some point. The rough cut wood with plaster and horse hair. The later construction with a mesh over brick then layered with plaster.
The furniture is not unique to the property but it all has a story and is historic in and of itself. The loom and spinning wheel in the lower level as a gift from the phinizy's was very interesting with the spinning wheel operational and the loom having plans to restore and bring operational, Amazing.
The inside is air conditioned for the comfort of the artifacts but it wasn't bad for patrons as well....
Read moreI definitely walked into a piece of American history today at the home of George Walton, one of the signers of the declaration of independence. An amazing landmark right here in Augusta's backyard that I was previously unaware of, I was delighted to learn that today it was free. Through a grant from the Daughters of the American Revolution, efforts are underway to complete a planned 10-year restoration project. They are currently into their third year, and things are starting to look pretty good.
So, I spent a good hour and a half there, and I learned quite a bit. Because it was a free day, there were quite a few people present. Unfortunately, I think the presentation suffered a little bit because of it. But I'm sure if you go during the week when there isn't as many people, they would take their time and and it wouldn't feel as rushed as it did.
Overall, however, I believe it was worth it and my time was well spent. I learned a lot today. Next time you're looking for something to do in augusta, I believe it would be worth it to take the time and have a tour, to get a little history lesson concerning a very important event affecting all of us in this great...
Read moreHis image is not on any coin or legal tender, but his influence is imprinted on the entire State of Georgia. George Walton's career started at an early age, and he took great interest in everything around him. He firstly became a lawyer before entering politics. George was one of the youngest signers of the Declaration of Independence, served twice as Governor of Georgia, and was also a Chief Justice in Georgia's Supreme Court. He also served as a U.S. Senator. Walton served as a Colonel in the Georgia militia during the Revolutionary War, and was injured and captured defending Savannah. He was held as a prisoner for nearly a year. The tour of the property was incredibly interesting. Ransom was very thorough, and she answered all my questions. I want to thank her, and all the members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for their hard work in preserving such important history, and for all the work they...
