It's not fun being sick. You feel awful. Your body hurts. You're exhausted and just want to crawl back into bed. The last thing you want to do is wait for three hours in an ER waiting room, only to be ushered into a freezing cold room where you get to wait another hour before you see the doctor for maby 2 minutes. This is why when I get sick and can't make it to my PCP, I go to Pro Med on 183.
When I arrive, I am greeted courteously. Then I sit in a clean, quiet and nicely decorated waiting room that has relaxing pictures on the walls and an aromatherapy diffuser. Yes, that's right--aromatherapy. The wait is short, and I am escorted back into a clean room that, unlike many other doctor's offices, isn't so cold that my teeth won't stop chattering. In fact, I sit comfortably without needing a jacket. Again, there are nice decorations on the wall so that the room doesn't make you feel like you're about to be looked at under a microscope like a laboratory rat.
A friendly nurse comes in and takes your vital signs and asks if you are comfortable. She is promptly followed by the doctor who smiles a genuine smile, makes eye contact, shakes your hand, and takes the time to actually listen to what you have to say. It seems like that should be obvious, but I can't tell you how many times I've been to a doctor and felt like he or she was in such a rush that I didn't even have time to explain why I was there. I myself am a chiropractor, and have to admit that I don't go to a medical doctor easily. I normally treat most of my conditions with supplements, herbs, and adjustments. And I see taking antibiotics as an absolute last resort because I know that taking them indiscriminately leads to super-bugs that are antibiotic resistant. AND antibiotics kill all the beneficial bacteria in your gut along with the bad ones, leading to disbiosis (an imbalance in your gut) and to yeast infections.
Why do I bring this up here?? Because one of the things I appreciate the most about Dr. Valentin, who has treated me several times at Pro-Med, is that he always runs a blood test before prescribing antibiotics. The last time I went in I was coughing up nasty yellow brown stuff, was aching all over, had a horrible cough, and was convinced I had bronchitis. But my bloodwork showed that I did NOT have a bacterial infection at all. (Antibiotics only work on bacteria, by the way. Not viruses and other things.) My bloodwork showed that all my symptoms were due to the cedar pollen. Even the yellow-brown mucus.
So he prescribed medication to open up the airways in my lungs, bring down the inflammation, and help me stop coughing. I had been suffering for almost two weeks and even took a week off of work because I thought I was infectious. But after one day on the medications he prescribed, I was back to normal and in my office treating my own patients. And NO ANTIBIOTICS!!
So many doctors don't take the time to do the blood test and just prescribe antibiotics based on symptoms, but Dr. Valentin really cares about his patients and doesn't cut corners. I felt like I was in very capable hands and would highly recommend Pro-Med to anyone seeking expert medical attention. Thank you...
Read moreOn November 8, 2023, I did my follow up visit at the Concentra urgent care located at 13831 US-183 Hwy in Austin, TX. My initial visit was to the Concentra at 2000 W Anderson Ln on November 3rd. The reason I came to this other location is because it was closer to home. Since this is a worker's comp claim, I immediately got the feeling the first doctor at the initial facility did NOT have my best interests at heart. On November 8th, I met with Dr. Stephen Van Roekel. Keep in mind, prior to this, I met with my regular doctor earlier in the day, who was very concerned about my health and overall well-being. Being hurt on the job; my doctor told me that there may be something more serious. In other words, he requested x-rays and said he would possibly request an MRI later if needed. When I provided this information to Dr. Van Roekel, he quickly shut me up and said, "No, no, I disagree with all of that!" He appeared to become upset and started waving his hands around and said he did NOT care what my personal doctor said. I was in shock and disbelief. I could not believe that a doctor would act so childish and make negative comments about another doctor. He told me to stand up and then said that I appeared to be a perfectly healthy young man. He never checked me or asked me about my pain level, nothing. He was a complete disgrace. I have never been treated by a doctor in such a way that he or she would dismiss me just by looking at me and assuming I am perfectly heathy. This makes me feel that doctors at these facilities want to immediately release patients back to normal duty. While I would love to be released back to normal duty, I feel that having persistent pain accompanied by other symptoms is something that should be addressed. I was not about to argue with an incompetent doctor. I kept my mouth shut and instead I called the facility and made a complaint against the doctor. The young lady I spoke with said a manger or supervisor would return my call. No one has returned my call. This place is a joke. After this incident, I do not trust Concentra anymore. Be careful if you get hurt on the job and you are sent to these facilities. Go with your primary...
Read moreThis is my second time coming to a ProMed (now US Healthworks) clinic. During my first experience at their S. Lamar location, the doctor was rude and kept interrupting me.
I work just next door to this location and was in a lot of pain from my stomach area, and was experiencing other odd symptoms. I figured I'd give it another shot, for convenience. After being taken in, the nurse was very caring. My doctor was decent. I felt as if it was another "we think we may know what it is, here's a script, now leave." I had blood work and another test done. I was told I would be called when tests came back in. After waiting in my exam room for a long period of time, I realized I had been forgotten, so I walked up to someone and they told me to wait in the waiting area and they'd call me up. After becoming tired of waiting, I got up and approached one of the women behind the desk. There were 3. Two seemed to not give a care in the world about what was happening. One other lady actually scolded the bad ones for not doing something (not related to me). The kind one apologized and since I had no co pay, that I could leave. I informed her that The doctor was supposed to give me some scripts, to which she finally got for me, and I was out on my way.
I have called them twice for two different things and my call seemed unimportant both times. I'm currently considering going to a completely different clinic to get re-examined and hopefully taken care of by someone who cares.
If you don't mind a little unprofessionalism and you have some extremely basic sickness, you may not mind their services. As for me, I don't think I'll visit another US Healthcare clinic again. I'd like to add that I'm typically a very patient, kind, and understanding person. I just feel like I didn't get the care and attention to detail that I needed.
I hope that once my test results come in, that they will be delivered by someone who cares, and who can change my whole experience. For now, I can only say that their service is rated one star. Because when it comes to ones health, you can't...
