I have been a Pat's games customer for many years, and have seen the store grow and transform within that time period. Pat's Games is a specialist store, having a large selection of products for the trading card game called Magic: the Gathering (MTG). They are also the best store in town for buying Disney Lorcana products and singles. They were the first store in Austin to become a Premier Play store for Magic, and the biggest Lorcana store from its inception. There is a place here for new and experienced players.
Pros: -Best place to play magic in town. -Largest selection of Magic and Lorcana singles/sealed product in Austin by far. -A nice outdoor patio with a beautiful pond and garden. They are currently building an enclosed section for the patio as well. -Friendly staff, great community -Multiple tournaments in a week from casual booster drafts to competitive events -Competitive prices on all product.
Cons: -The online order system has its flaws see note -Parking can appear to be limited during peak hours, but there are other places to park nearby. If there is no parking in the main lot, you can park across the street at the daycare, next door at the Christi center, or on the street across.
I highly recommend this store if you have any interest in the games they offer.
*A critique on the online ordering system
I used to praise the online ordering system, but now I must address the glaring issues. I have seen other competitors use software such as Binder POS to inventory and sell cards. There are advantages and disadvantages that come with it, but as a consumer I like to know what's in stock so I can plan my purchases and/or find other sources for what a store doesn't have. I assume with the rapid releases of supplemental sets and variants in recent years Pat's has struggled to keep their system up to date. Certain cards and sets aren't listed on their buy and sell lists. Foils are manually added and frequently aren't taken out of the system after ordering. Buy prices are whacky and don't seem to be frequently updated. While you can (and I certainly do) go in store to review my orders, its taxing on the employees to have to remedy orders and requests that could be solved by having more accurate software.
I hope this will be changed in the near future, because I truly love this store and wish the...
Read moreDefinitely have a decent selection of singles/sealed product. Greeted me both times when I came in. But I've ordered singles from Pat's games twice within the last year or so and both times they have missed card(s). The first order was rectified with no issues, they gave me a free pack for my troubles. The second time around I placed a $400+ order and ended up missing another card that I was charged for, and was refunded a card that was in stock on the site but apparently they didn't have it. Once I showed up to pick up my order, they did mention the refund, and asked me if I wanted a higher cost version of the same card. I refused since I already ordered the replacement on Card Kingdom. I should have opened my order when I was in store, but I wanted to trust that maybe my order before this one was a fluke and we all make mistakes. But twice now something has been missing. Just learn from my mistakes, make sure you check your pickup order before...
Read moreI would like to start off by saying that as far as Magic Events go (such as an FNM Modern or Legacy Tournament), I have never attended an event but I hear good reviews of them. Everyone I know that’s gone has been pleased with the experience, and the staff seems pleasant.
My problem with this shop is the website, and the lack of a coherent catalogue. In most of the shops that have a reasonable supply of MTG singles, those singles are catalogued and displayed on their website. Pats instead asks that you put in what you want and they will see if they have it in stock. This is certainly a way to run this portion of the business, but I found it unintuitive and annoying to have to wait and see what the shop actually had. I feel like it would save time in the long run for the employees and also be more appealing to the customers.
Also the website is not very pleasant to look it. It’s in desperate need...
