Class of 2007 here. CSUB is looking pretty rough these days. I live nearby and walk my dog through there daily. Students drive recklessly. Doordashers are even worse drivers bringing the students their food. Cars blast onto Kroll leaving campus at warp speed and I've almost been hit in my own vehicle multiple times. Students walk into traffic phone to nose, I guess assuming cars will stop for them. I guess you really can't teach common sense.
It's dangerous and the students seem sketchier every year. With only a 36% graduation rate it seems like a huge waste of taxpayer money. I would figure BC would supply all the need for higher education you would want in Bakersfield. Anyone wanting more than BC can offer is probably going out of town to a better school anyway. CSUB now seems just like a spot to hang with the homies on the tax payer dime.
Campus PD are non-existent (although one popped out of thin air to pull me over for no front license plate while driving through even though 90% of student cars don't have them) so you're basically on your own if a student has beef with you or you get hit by some tuner car going 30mph over the speed limit while ignoring all stop signs. CSUB seems to be the perfect example of the current education system in America these days. Just keep pushing the kids through the system until they get here. I'm honestly surprised that the graduation rate is so low. That at least proves that CSUB does have some kind of educational standards in place for the time being. I still have to wonder though how much taxpayer money is wasted per student while they're marking time until they drop out.
The campus is poorly maintained. The overflowing trash cans bring in the cockroaches. Students just throw their food on the walkways also. Disgusting! Walking through at night reminds me of the bug tunnel from Temple of Doom. Lawns are either over grown or dying. It's really sad to see the school this way. I have great memories of my time here when I went after the military. It seems like this all happened in a few years too. If you have children looking for a serious education, I'd recommend another campus. I never finished my MSW program and probably never will. I have no desire to return to this campus.
Edit: A new wrinkle to this saga of a review appears! If you're like me and a rental serf in this economy, know that if you rent next door to this campus, the students will use the foliage around facility entrance to party and smoke dope at all hours of the day or night. You will hear them loudly carrying on blasting their music late into the night most every night. Campus PD has no jurisdiction because the dorms are not CSU property apparently. The inmates quite literally run the asylum. Waste your private security's or BPD's time to roust them away and they'll be back the next day and in greater numbers. They've hurled insults as I walk my dog past on our nightly trips out. It's a nightmare so thanks CSUB for bringing this to our doorsteps.
Know that while you're paying out the nose for a roof over your head you'll be paying for theirs, and their tuition, and their food, and their pretty much everything, as they slowly drive you crazy at night, with your tax money! I have never seen such a group of entitled and disrespectful people in my life. This is adult day care and nothing more. I guess as the saying goes, it keeps them off the streets. These are your future scholars Bakersfield. Absolute trash! Let them destroy CSUB, send you kids elsewhere if you want them to have an...
Read moreThis school could use some updates. I applied to one of the graduate programs. I received an email indicating to fill out a printed version of the application to the program. Everything has to be printed on paper. I also had to make an order money check to pay for the application and other payments. I believe there should be options do to it online. I had to pay overnight shipping for I did not what my private information to be lost. There was a worker that has helped me a lot of the questions, but still made me uneasy about the program. I did not receive any notification when my application was received. The only way I knew it was received was because a worker called me to ask me a few questions about my application. Months went by. I called April and admissions did not know anything about my status on my application. I had to call someone in the program. (Same worker that was helping me). She said by mid April the school should know who they are accepting. Mid April pass now it is towards the end of May. I still have not received anything from the school. I called to ask again and the same worker told me end of May. There are only four days left for the end of May. Fall semester usually starts in August. No notification at all from the school. No rejection notification, nor waitlisted, nor acceptance. A friend even jokingly said “Does this school even exist?”. So disappointing. I cannot even plan my education without knowing if I got accepted or not. Maybe I should have applied to...
Read moreJanuary 10, 2025 - CSUB Road Runner Aquatics My daughter at first loved it ; then they started adding too many kids per class , this is harder for one coach to concentrate on each kid progress. My daughter eventually lost interest because of this on july 2024 . Unfortunately my daughter has had some psychological issues to which she’s seeing a professional; it was suggested for her to try again her favorite sport. At the beginning of January 2025 I contacted Mr. Ryan B. ( the head coach) ; at the time he was polite and gave her a one day swimming test , next day I paid the $140 + fee for the month; the only thing he said was if I ever wanted to cancel I need to give two weeks notice. Unfortunately my daughter had a nervous episode the next day not wanting to go back; the psychologist told me that it was not a good idea to force her. I emailed Mr. Ryan about possibly canceling since she didn’t take a single class only the testing day. Mr. Denied my money back , I asked if I could at least get half back ( $ that can still help with my daughter’s treatment) I am a single mom with no job , I have a disability, I am trying to help my daughter the best I can with her health issues. Mr. Ryan said that only extreme cases he will give the $ back , I tried a higher up , but he said that he was the only person to talk to. Yes I am upset, but I also want to warn others about this place , money seems to be a priority for them , not the kids...
