Would that I could review the food, which looked good from their website. That coupled with the numerous great reviews here got me to give it a try when I was passing through Bakersfield on a road trip.
Unfortunately, I walked in at around 8:10 on a Wednesday evening, the patio had lots of people and inside were several tables with patrons. A server appeared to be helping one table when I walked in, so I sat down at the table next to that group.
I walked out at 8:30, having not once been approached nor even acknowledged for service. In fact, I never saw another server even walk remotely close to that area of the place (I did see one server -- perhaps, hard to tell for sure -- going to the patio). The bartender came out a few times to clear glasses from tables and chat with other patrons. Seemed to look right at me a few times, but never came over. I didn't see any other servers on the floor at all.
It's not like the place was completely packed, as I say the outdoor patio looked maybe 80% full, the inside maybe 30% full. No roaming servers? Nobody to notice a new (potential) customer?
I might have flagged down somebody to ask for help directly, but the fact that I didn't even see servers working the floor to assist the other patrons told me this was not going to be a good night for service.
I see lots of reviews raving about the service here... maybe it was just an off night, but based on what I saw I'm not inclined to try again if I'm ever in the area.
BTW my backup plan also had a wait, but there I was greeted at the door, and they took my name and explained immediately that it would be 10-15 minutes. All fine, that place was in fact quite busy and I understand -- no problem waiting as long as I know they know I'm there and...
Read moreRelaxed local craft beer and pub fare. Lengthwise is one of a small handful of establishments owned by the bakersfield based Lengthwise Brewing Company, and thus a true local business. This location is a restaurant/pub with a moderate selection of food and plenty of beer. The food is mostly pub fare such as burgers, salads, and fries with sauces and cheese on top. Having eaten here a few times I'd note the portioning of different orders seems to vary a little more than most restaurants but overall the proces are reasonable and nothing I have ordered has been disappointing. The food is good, if not amazing, and exactly what you would want while drinking here. Local beers are the real draw with a combination of staples and rotating seasonal options. Be warned: Hops in in currently so expect a lot of IPA and hop forward options. That said malty or wheat beers are also available. The atmosphere is relaxed with a somewhat kitsch and rustic interior. Seating is plentiful, both indoors and out, and the soundscape every time I have visited is the low roar of conversation drawing out a faint radio. This is a laid back local place for after work beers with friends and although the craft beer costs a bit more it's well worth the experiance if that is what you...
Read moreThere are 3 locations in town for Lengthwise Brewing Company. Being a local business, they have quite the following in town for their locally-brewed beers. The food is just OK. It’s standard bar pub food (burgers, appetizers, salads). But people come here for the excellent local beers and not the food. There are a lot of TVs and music going so there’s always something to look at. It’s a great place if you want to have a large gathering. When I was here, there were about three large parties of 15 or so. It’s very easy to move the tables around to your liking. The Marketplace location has a wonderful wraparound patio and is pet friendly. There is also a large outdoor patio at the location on District Boulevard, so I would imagine that one is pet friendly also. I dined in as a solo diner, aand my only complaint was that the service was not very friendly. I felt like I was bothering them to place my order. The gentleman behind the bar never smiled once and looks like he hates his job. The person who brought my food over never came back to check on me. Maybe if you sit at the bar the serving issue is not...
