Don't miss any of the self-guided trails as you're making your way through Animal Kingdom. Especially in Asia land where you'll see colorful & exotic creatures.

The Maharajah Jungle Trek is set in the mystical Anandapur Royal Forest. There is a theme throughout, and you'll see it in the ancient ruins, palace walls, footbridges, and waterfalls that are deep within the trail.

The Komodo dragon lair was our first stop. It hadn't quite warmed up enough at noon to actually catch a glimpse of him. It's probably best to wait until it's warm enough to see them. It was a very chilly day. We didn't see a whole lot of activity in this section until we came across the bat habitat. That was surprising to us because we always thought bats were purely nocturnal. They are for the most part. But, these particular giant Malayan Flying Foxes were at the very tippy top of the tree basking in the sun and eating fruit (such as watermelon) that was hanging down. Trying to take a picture from down below would have not done this guy any justice. All I can say is that I've never seen a bat this big in my entire life. There were also terrariums with other small creatures inside that area.

When leaving that building, we could hear a very vocal tiger out in the distance. We finally got to see it walking by while we were on the bridge. The roar of that tiger seemed to make everything vibrate. No joke! We really felt it. The rest of that habitat was closed, so we didn't get to see the deer nor the buffalo. I think they said they are bringing in newer exhibits. By the way, there is always a cast member around that will answer your questions. I love that! They are all super informative.

So, the highlight for us was the aviary section of the trek. There were so many beautiful birds. Make sure you look up, and in between the bushes. They are all over, and they cautiously walk out in front of you at times. There was this huge pheasant up high in one of the trees surrounded by colorful fruit doves (and other Asian birds). I believe the cast member said it was a Malayan Great Argus Pheasant. The picture I took of it was too dark to post. It's not as colorful as a peacock, but very majestic. We also spotted the Crested Wood Partridges and Nicobar Pigeons walking around the pathway. One bird that I initially couldn't identify could actually be endangered. I'm not sure if it's the endangered Edward's Pheasant, or maybe just a variant of that Vietnamese Pheasant. I love how the bright red color makes it's eyes pop out so beautifully.

We loved this trail! I think it took us about 20-30 minutes to walk through it. We stopped a lot along the way. It was a perfect break after lunch at Yak & Yeti. I can't wait to go back. I'm sure there will be more animal sightings on...

One of several must-see items at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park The Maharajah Jungle Trek is tucked away in the Asia section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It is a surprisingly chill and immersive walking trail that’s easy to miss but totally worth checking out. You’ll find it near Kali River Rapids, and it usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes to go through—longer if you like to linger and really take in the details. It’s NOT a ride, so there’s no wait time or lightning lane drama—just a self-paced stroll through the several animal habitats of lush, themed environments that feel like the ruins of an ancient Southeast Asian palace reclaimed by nature. I try to go through this almost every time I visit the park. The highlight for most people is the tigers, which you can sometimes catch lounging or pacing in their beautifully designed habitat, but there’s also lots of other animals like fruit bats, Komodo dragons, gibbons, and tons of exotic birds in a giant open aviary. What really makes this trek stand out, though, is the storytelling in the design—crumbling temples, murals, prayer flags. It’s all so rich in atmosphere that you almost forget you’re in a theme park. There are cast members at all major points and informative signs if you are interested in the animals or the area. If you're looking for a relaxing, less crowded experience that still brings the Disney magic, this is one of Animal Kingdom’s...
