The star is for the winery and the beautiful land to explore. That said, I have some concerns.

Between the slave house and the mausoleum, there’s a sign just off the path that reads:

‘For example, there are accounts of white seashells or pebbles being used to decorate burial places in some parts of the South. These items are indicative of the watery underworld that features in the religious customs of some Central African tribes; additionally, some historians note that in Central Africa, the color white—not black—is associated with death.’

While partially correct, this description is incomplete. In many Central African cultures, white is not only associated with death but also with ancestors, peace, victory, spiritual purity, and the afterlife. Among the Fang, Punu, Gbaya, Banda, and Mandjia peoples, for example, white often symbolizes a powerful and elevated spiritual transition. Presenting it solely as a death-related color omits this broader cultural meaning.

Inside the slave house, several informational displays contain interpretations of the Transatlantic Slave Trade that I believe are misleading. These issues may arise from omission rather than deliberate intent, but they still distort history.

The reality is that slavery was a global institution long before Europeans arrived in West Africa. Many African kingdoms and societies actively participated in capturing and selling their own people and members of rival groups to any buyers—Arab, Jewish, Asian, or European—who had the means to purchase them. The Arab/Jewish slave trade across the Sahara and the Red Sea predated the Transatlantic system by centuries and continued for more than a thousand years, taking millions of Africans to North Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. Conditions for these captives could be brutal: castration of male slaves was common in some Islamic and Jewish markets, and mortality rates during transport were often extremely high.

In East Africa, Arab, Jewish and Persian traders acquired Africans through raids and coastal markets, sending many to Arabia, Persia, and the Indian subcontinent. Some Africans were also transported across the Indian Ocean to serve in military or domestic roles in India, Sri Lanka, and other parts of Asia.

China, including during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), practiced slavery through conquest, tribute, and trade. Most slaves were from Central Asia, Korea, and Southeast Asia, though small numbers of East Africans arrived via the Indian Ocean trade network facilitated by Arab and Jewish merchants. These Africans were considered exotic and often used as status symbols in elite households, with limited rights and no prospects for freedom.

Even in the Ottoman Empire—which ruled large parts of Southeast Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East—African slaves were used as soldiers, eunuchs, and concubines. Many endured extreme hardship, and mortality rates in some roles were staggering.

Slavery, in other words, was opportunistic and practiced wherever profit or power could be gained. It was not unique to any single race, region, or time period.

Visitors might consider this question: Would it have been better to live as a slave on this land, or as one in the Syrian desert? Neither choice is acceptable, but the comparison shows that conditions varied widely depending on geography and culture.

In the modern West, all races are legally free. European-descended peoples played a central role in building the infrastructure, institutions, and technological advancements of what is now the most materially advanced civilization in history—one that offers unprecedented freedoms and opportunities to people of all backgrounds, including millions of legal immigrants. While acknowledging the moral failings of the past, it is both unfair and dangerous to portray this demographic as inherently malicious in the very societies they helped to create.

The modern world benefits daily from innovations, governance systems, and rights frameworks developed within this civilization—benefits now...

This place really missed the mark for me in several areas.

  1. Everything in their store is from China. One would think they would support local artists but nope. A plantation still using cheap labor for a profit…

  2. There was nowhere to sit and drink wine inside. It’s the cold months so inside makes sense. Right next to the winery, which is more like a tiny overcrowded gift shop, were 2 large rooms used to display carriages which would have been perfect to house some tables and chairs to enjoy some wine. This is such a missed opportunity and shows a lack of initiative on the managements part.

  3. The slave cabin education is presented in a very inappropriate way. I applaud the efforts to finally discuss and reveal the slave history… BUT this topic needs to be presented in a much more serious manner.

When you walk into the cabin there are pictures and reading boards on all 4 walls. The content was informative but I struggled to read everything because they were playing a video on the flatscreen tv so loud that I just gave up on reading and took pictures of the content to read later.

The video - The upbeat tempo of how this man is talking about slavery paired with the upbeat banjo music in the background struck me wrong. The video is on a loop the whole time. No time for silence to mourn the families we are reading about. That video needs to be taken down and re presented with a serious tone. Or no video at all.

The whole time I stood there, trying to read, I kept flashing back to my time at the holocaust museums in Germany. The mood in those museums were serious, respectful of the dead and presented appropriately as a tragedy of that magnitude should be. I kept imagining this video being in one of those German museums and quickly realized I wouldn’t see this type of video in those museums because it is inappropriate. Silence is what is needed for deep reflection when discussing the issue of slavery.

The images of the slave families struck me wrong too. If one knew nothing about slavery and these images were the first to be seen one might think they are simply a poor family enjoying their family time and tending to the horses. Even the font selection on the large boards in the second half of the cabin struck me wrong. They used a font that was whimsical and playful. Bizarre.

The entire staff and management need to visit holocaust museums in Germany to see and experience how to communicate such a history. I’d recommend they sit down and talk with German museum curators as well.

This location has potential and beauty for private events but I would not enjoy hosting an event here due to the history.

I would like the slave portion of this site to be the majority of the focus. And more seriousness to the topic added.

Even in death the slave master is glorified while the slaves are an afterthought. Think about it. The mansion is so special that you need to pay for a guided tour and no photos are allowed in this very special house but the slave quarters are accessible with a simple self guided walk of...

Belle Meade Mansion was a wonderful find. It was the first stop after we got off of the plane. The drive into the plantation is inviting and beautiful and "small" a definite show of the time of horse and carriage. As a lover of horses, I was intrigued by the history of this home and family and bloodlines of the horses that resided there. To find out that a bloodline horse was stabled there was astounding! I was hooked immediately. The mansion tour was jammed packed with loads of family and horse racing history. I must give a bit of a warning to some folks... they do speak about the very past owners of the home having slaves. I know this is a very sensitive subject for a lot of people. Our group had Justin as our guide. He was extremely tactful throughout the tour and spoke about history as it was. I wanted this fact to be made aware that it does get mentioned in the tour. I will state again that Justin was very thoughtful and extraordinarily knowledgeable about the history of the home and surrounding grounds. I was very pleased with the tour. After the tour, we were led to a wine tasting. They had some very lovely tasting wines. One awesome touch... shipping to your home so no carrying on a plane! My favorite was the blackberry. The surrounding grounds were kept impeccable. My daughters were amazed by the extraordinary stables. Please don't miss the games behind the stables! You can get warmed up playing Bocce Ball, horseshoes, cornhole or golf and then grab a scoop of ice cream from the ice cream shop right there to cool you down! (Wish it was open as early as we were there! It was pretty warm that morning!) If you have an interest in Tennessee and/or horse racing history, I would recommend stopping in to take a stroll around Belle Meade Plantation. You do not have to take the mansion tour to walk around the grounds or visit the wine shop or gift shop (has very cute things in there by the way!). If you find yourself needing something to do this summer and you have a few free hours... stop on in...
