Back when we lived in the East Bay this park was our sanctuary. Paticularly during early pandemic months, Berkeley was draconian with mask measures. Living in a condo in a multistory building with a 2 year old, Codonices with its creek, stone slide, playground and Rose Garden across the way was the savior. Located in the hills just minutes away from 4th Street, one can pick up lunch and have a lovely picnic. Coincidentally now living in Sacramento, Codornices came through again as a sanctuary from the triple digit heat we have been experiencing! Though the drive is now 70 minutes, we spent the entire day in Berkeley, majority of the time in the park in 75 degree weather! With that said, its probably too long of a drive for most Sacramentans, but with roots in the East Bay, it easily is a solid choice for us...
Read moreThis place is just cool (somewhat literally, there is a good mix of sunny and shady). The cement slide is fast, faster if you sit on a piece of cardboard that you find laying around on the ground. Swings for big kids that get you pretty high, fenced in sandy area with a slide and baby swings and a little structure to sit inside of. Then there are the rose gardens, which smell delicious even in their decline. This part is not super stroller friendly. There are hiking paths (if you walk beyond the cement slide), which are stroller friendly to a point, and then become more dirt paths and difficult. Read moreCodornices is an expansive park opposite the Berkeley Rose Garden. Great for families and all ages. There are play structures for both smaller and older children.
The concrete slide is recommended for all - even brave adults who can keep their elbows and knees in! Just be sure to bring or find a sturdy piece of cardboard to prevent personal injury.
The park also contains a basketball court, baseball field, picnic areas, grassy hillside, and hiking trails. The hills and dirt trails can be a bit muddy during the rainy season. You can use the tunnel to cross into the Rose Garden...
