The Gilder Restoration — Attraction in Bridgeport

Luciano, Gilder's owner, is at once an old world craftsman, contemporary businessman, and patient teacher.

He and his team recently restored a dozen pieces for me the largest groups being bedroom sets from different eras as well as single pieces which include a formal breakfront, contemporary table, an antique chair, and a small inlaid jewlry box. In each case, he drew my attention to the natural grain of the wood, its type, the level of skill used in creating inlays and presented me with refinishing options and advice.

Communicating by text complimented in-person meetings in his shop where I was able to best understand my refinishing options.

We were thinking of replacing a very high quality home office desk. It was very marred, chipped, and faded from many years of hard use. After weeks of searching, we could not find another desk that had the same quality and features. I did some online research and found out about "The Gilder" which is a furniture restoration establishment owned by a gentleman named Luciano. He came to our house to estimate the cost to restore the desk and then took it to his shop. Previously posted a review indicating a very high-end job on the bar cabinet described below. The follow up unfortunately is not good news. The lacquer finish did not hold up and the Ebony top, which was also lacquered could not have any object placed on top without making dents into the soft lacquer. Luciano was extremely slow (many months) to remediate and ultimately failed to make this piece right. He dismissed my complaints. Would not do business with him again.

Did a mid century bar cabinet in high lacquer finish. Ebony top and toe-kick with fabulous complex grain on the front and side doors in a deep rich shade. The restoration is gorgeous and flawless. Highly recommend these people. Excellent throughout the process. Hope they post pics on...
