When I think of the Theatre District, my first thought always goes to Shea’s Performing Arts Center. It’s impossible to talk about the district without mentioning Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, which is nothing short of a local treasure. Built in 1926, the sheer grandeur of this place is jaw-dropping — from the intricate designs on the ceiling to the massive crystal chandelier, it’s like stepping back in time to an era when movie palaces were the epitome of luxury. Nowadays, it’s the go-to spot for Broadway tours, and every time I walk through those doors, I can’t help but feel proud that we have such a world-class venue right here in Buffalo. I’ve seen everything from Hamilton to The Lion King there, and the experience is always top-notch.

Right next door, you have Shea’s Smith Theatre and Shea’s 710 Theatre, which offer more intimate performances compared to the grand scale of the main Shea’s Theatre. These spaces are perfect for smaller productions, and I love the variety they bring to the district. You might catch a local play one week and a touring off-Broadway show the next.

Buffalo has always had a strong connection to the arts, and Alleyway Theatre has been an incredible space for showcasing local talent. Their commitment to original works is impressive, and I’ve seen some truly unique productions here. The annual “A Christmas Carol” adaptation has become a holiday tradition for many Buffalonians, myself included.

The Irish Classical Theatre Company is another gem in the district. Nestled in the Andrews Theatre, it provides a cozy, stage-in-the-round experience. If you’re a fan of classical works or Irish playwrights, you’re in for a treat. I’ve always been impressed by the quality of performances here — it’s like being transported into another world. Their renditions of Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde are particularly memorable.

For those of us who enjoy thought-provoking, contemporary plays, Road Less Traveled Productions offers some of the most compelling theater in Buffalo. They take risks with their programming, and I’ve seen them tackle everything from modern dramas to local stories that resonate on a deeper level.

Of course, the district isn’t just for adults. Theatre of Youth (TOY), located in the beautifully restored Allendale Theatre, is a place where I’ve taken my kids on numerous occasions. The productions are high quality, and they’re always engaging for young audiences. Watching my children’s faces light up during a live performance is something special.

One of the unique aspects of Buffalo’s theater scene is its focus on inclusivity. Buffalo United Artists has been doing incredible work in amplifying LGBTQ+ voices, and their productions often delve into important social issues, providing a platform for underrepresented stories.

What’s a night at the theater without great food? The Theatre District is surrounded by a host of restaurants that have become part of the overall experience. I’ve enjoyed many pre-show meals at places like Tappo or Bacchus Wine Bar, where you can grab a bite before heading into the show. The restaurants here really round out the perfect night out in downtown Buffalo.

One of the things that I find particularly impressive about the district is the mix of old and new. You can walk down Main Street and see historic buildings with their ornate architecture, a testament to Buffalo’s past, while also noticing the steady growth and revitalization happening around the area. The Theatre District has maintained its historic charm while embracing modern development, which I think speaks to the character of our city.

I can’t finish this review without mentioning Curtain Up!, the event that officially kicks off the theater season every year. It’s one of those quintessential Buffalo experiences, where Main Street comes alive with outdoor performances, a formal gala, and an excitement that reminds us all how special this...

As a season ticket holder to Shea's, I enjoy the theater district very much. Dining is easy if you make reservations about a week or 2 in advance. There is free street parking if available. The paid lots are $20+ that are close to the theater. The area has extra security for theater nights. The Shea's side entrance is locked due to the building converting to housing. It's unlocked just prior to showtime. So, if you park on the main side and dine on the opposite side, you must go through the alleyway, which may take you out of your way depending on where you're going. And can be a...

You won't think a city the size of Buffalo would have a theater district but it does, and it an amazing variety of quality in just a few blocks. Irish Classical, the Smith, Alleyway, 710 and the historic Sheas theater all offer a great evening of theater. Before and after the show are locations for great food and drink. The indoor theater season generally lasts from September to June of the following year. BUFFALO is alive with Art...
