The monument was erected in 2014 in Hampton Park and honors Denmark Vesey, a freedman who lived in Charleston and was executed in 1822 for plotting a slave revolt. The park was lively and full of activity. Some vegetation problems persisted in some areas but Hampton Park is a wonderful go to place for outdoor activity. Being a playwright and having started a play about Denmark Vesey, I desired to capture my own photo of a statue of him but I didn’t find it there. I did find Charlestonians to be friendly and I...

Perverse place to plant an important abolition monument … in a park [still] named for Confederate General Wade Hampton and former governor. [Wade is also noted as having been the largest slave owner in the state.] Sadly vandals damaged the statue...
