The best of the best in improv comedy, and I can't think of a better way to spend a couple hours on a Friday or Saturday night in Charleston in between dinner and drinks (or the other way around). Other improv shows I've been to were incredibly and painfully unfunny and awkward, but Theatre 99 and their rotating and core cast are so great it will entirely change your opinion on improv. Started going to Laugh for a Lincoln years ago ($5 for a midweek show), and have been dragging friends and family and strangers there ever since. This place is hidden in a slightly murderous-looking back alley, but once you find parking and climb the 102 stairs, they've got all the cold PBR and reclining theater seats you could want. The crowd is (almost) always good, the performers are sharp and hilarious, and the rotating skits are always fresh and funny, even if you've seen the freeze scene 100 times before. The owners regularly feature in the shows, and handle everything with a personal and gracious touch - we've stood around for 20 minutes talking to them after a show before, and just had Brandy personally call me to make sure my tickets were changed to the show we wanted. You can tell they love this place. Again, the best way to laugh away a couple hours any time they have a show, but make sure you bring cash! (They do have...
ย ย ย Read moreDo yourself a favor and spend an evening at Theatre 99! I went to a show here and there growing up in the Charleston area and I had a great time. Later on in life, I decided I wanted to take some improv classes, I became HOOKED! The classes are so fun, thought provoking and have benefits in and out of the theatre. I have completed levels 1-5, as well as taking special classes and workshops. During that time people at my work have noticed and I have been asked to do a lot more fun, front facing roles - it truly made a difference for me in how I approach life and how I incorporate so much more play into my world. Now if classes arenโt your jam - no biggie!! The shows provide so much enjoyment. If youโre looking for a fun date night or just a new thing to do with friends, be prepared to laugh your butt off! The shows are always hilarious and I have had so many friends thank me for the experience! *Please note the bar is cash only, but they do have an ATM onsite.
I love theatre 99 and I think...

However, the second act was quite disappointing for several reasons. It involved one recommendation from the audience regarding "jetpacks", which within minutes turned to mocking Christianity for the remaining forty-five minutes of the night.
Furthermore the quality of comedy went significantly downhill. The humor, that was truly a skilled art in the first half, became a series of slang terms that was repeatedly over used throughout the second act.
The feel of the show went from a talented group of professional comedians to the humor that you would expect in an 8th grade boys' locker room. Given the performance of tonight's second half of the show, I would have a hard time...
