Haunted history tours are always the best way to catch some historic sites and cool stories in a city when visiting. Imagine how excited to find out you can do this in a carriage ride!
The horses appear to be well fed and pretty chill. They look very well cared for and healthy. Our horse was a gentle giant. I think his name was Griffin?
We were a party of 6 for the 730 tour. We ended up being about 45 minutes early. Even so, we were still put in the very back of the carriage. There are about 5 rows so I was concerned about hearing everything.(Luckily our guide was pretty loud and we heard most everything.)
Our guide was training someone and she told a story and did great. It was fun to see him encourage her and take turns. His stories were very entertaining and he was an absolute gem! You can tell he really enjoys meeting people.
My only disappointment is that the route was only about 35 minutes. I would have expected at least an hour for $50 per person, especially since they pack you in four to a row! They could have stopped at a couple of the sites and let us get out for a closer look to take pics. That could eat up another 10 or 20 minutes. It's almost impossible to get photos crammed together with strangers on the bench!
It was a beautiful evening, perfect weather, great (squished) company, with a talented storyteller....

Our experience with Old South Carriage Tours was nothing short of unforgettable. Carol, our guide, and Liam, our beautiful and steady horse, were both absolutely outstanding. Carol’s deep knowledge of Charleston’s history and her passion for storytelling brought the city to life. The care and pride she takes in her work is impressive—calling it “overwhelming” would actually be an understatement.
What made it even more special was how Carol helped us re-create scenes from The Notebook. I got to play Noah, and my wife posed as Allie—it was a fun, heartfelt memory we’ll always cherish. Carol pointed out all the iconic filming spots and added little stories and suggestions that made it even more personal.
We loved it so much we came back later that night for the haunted carriage tour, which was equally amazing and just the right mix of spooky and historic.
Also, for those who might wonder about the horses—don’t. Coming from Amish country, we know what poor treatment can look like. Liam and the rest of the horses are clearly treated with the highest level of care and respect. They’re well-behaved, well-fed, and clearly loved.
We can’t wait to return—and when we do, we’re hoping for another ride with Carol and Liam....

We started with the haunted carriage ride on our first evening—and what an introduction it was. As the sun dipped behind the historic buildings, the city transformed into a moody, lantern-lit maze of shadows and whispers. Our guide was an incredible storyteller, weaving chilling tales of Charleston’s haunted past as we passed old graveyards, creaking mansions, and dark alleyways.
We returned for a daytime carriage tour, and it was like seeing the city through a completely different lens. Bathed in sunlight, Charleston revealed its vibrant colors and architectural splendor. Our guide provided rich historical context and pointed out little details we would have missed on foot. It was a charming and educational ride—slow-paced, scenic, and thoroughly relaxing.
Each experience added a new layer: mystery, history, and natural beauty. Taken together, they offered a complete picture of Charleston’s timeless allure. The horses were stunning and clearly well cared for—calm, healthy, and expertly handled. It was clear that Old South Carriage Company treats their animals with great respect, which made the experience even more enjoyable....
