It is a very beautiful place. The trees and architecture of the surrounding homes are very relaxing. The gazebo in the center is over 100 years old but has been kept in such great shape. There are plaques commemorating the capture and execution of a famous pirate and his crew. As for the civil war monuments there, I know everyone has their own opinion on the subject. The statues themselves are beautiful and yes it is a part of our history as a nation. I think it would be a shame as it would take away from the beauty of the area. The only issue I have with it is if you see all of the historical landmarks from the Civil War you wouldn't know what the war was about or even who won. The tour guides there have to take classes and tests every year to teach people about the area. If you were telling the story of a Superbowl would you leave out who...

Stede was a pirate, though not a very good one, hung here in December 1718. He was known as the Gentleman Pirate because he was educated, having been born into a wealthy British family on Barbados. It was never clear why he had turned to privacy as he still had holdings and family in Barbados but the oft repeated reason, never substantiated, was that he could no longer stand his wife. He also had an association with Edward Teach, better known...

Luckily, the Historical Society of Charleston organize the 1930s and prevented a lot of the buildings from being raised and replaced with high-rises. So all of the residences in South Charleston are still originally built historic homes, from 1700s, and they were never subdivided into multiple residences or replaced with newer properties.
The city is clean and safe, and coming from California I was surprised to not see any homeless people. You can see women jogging at night, couples just walking around, and it is perfectly safe.
Almost every house has a sign up describing its history, which is perfect if you are a big...
