A Scorching Indictment of Toast's Abysmal Negligence and Dishonest Practices
Let this serve as an unequivocal warning to anyone considering patronizing Toast: your money and your time are clearly held in utter contempt by this establishment. Our recent experience transcends mere disappointment; it plunges into the realm of blatant incompetence, broken promises, and frankly, what feels like a deliberate disregard for their patrons. Three months ago, during a period when Toast Charleston subjected its customers to the additional discomfort of a heat outage (a separate debacle in itself), we were unfortunately persuaded by an untrained hostess to purchase a pricey gift card. Little did we know, this seemingly innocuous transaction was the first act in a three-month-long saga of frustration and infuriating silence. The hostess, demonstrably ill-equipped for her role, failed to load the promised, paid for balance onto the gift card. The true extent of Toast's ineptitude was revealed when the intended recipient attempted to use the card, only to be met with the humiliating reality of a zero balance. What followed was a Kafkaesque nightmare of attempting to rectify Toast's egregious error. We engaged with three separate managers, culminating in a 30-minute conversation with Angela Sheridan, the supposed "tiger up mgr." Ms. Sheridan meticulously tracked the transaction, unequivocally acknowledged the hostess's mistake, and confirmed the card had never been used. She offered hollow assurances of a full refund to our credit card and even dangled the pathetic carrot of "taking care of us so we'd return" – a truly insulting proposition considering the preceding and subsequent events. Despite this explicit acknowledgment and promise of resolution, absolutely nothing has been done. The promised refund has failed to materialize. Our repeated attempts to follow up have been met with a wall of deafening silence. Between the gift card recipient and myself, we have left no less than a dozen messages, each one vanishing into the void as if our concerns are utterly inconsequential. Toast's behavior is not merely negligent; it borders on the dishonest. To sell a gift card without loading the balance, to acknowledge the error and promise rectification, and then to completely ignore all subsequent attempts at communication demonstrates a profound lack of integrity and a shocking disregard for basic customer service principles. We are beyond being inconvenienced; we feel actively defrauded and deliberately ignored. This is not simply a case of a missed detail; it is a pattern of incompetence compounded by a callous indifference to their customers. We are done being ignored. We demand our refund NOW. And to any prospective customer reading this: steer clear of Toast. Your money is safer elsewhere, and your sanity will thank you. This establishment has proven itself to be a black hole of customer service, where promises are empty and your concerns are treated with utter contempt. Consider...
Read moreI don’t like to write negative reviews, but I am rattled by my experience at this institution. It was about 90 degrees outside, and I came here with my toddler-aged daughter, who was initially sleeping when we arrived, to get a drink and cool down. We ended up ordering a waffle because the manager said we couldn’t stay there if we were only ordering drinks, even though there were many empty tables. OK, I didn’t argue. I ordered food. My daughter woke up and started having a tantrum. I was trying everything I could to calm her. If you are a parent, you can understand how stressful of an experience this is. I left one time to take her outside and came back in, hoping some food and juice would help to calm her down. Nothing was working. Essentially, she needed to cool down and take some time to calm. I was about to get up to take her outside again when the manager came over and said, something needs to be done, people are complaining. In so many words, she asked us to leave. I had not touched anything that I ordered, but we were expected to pay full price for all of it.
I don’t believe that anyone complained. The only people near us came up to me on the street and said they were not at all bothered by the baby and they felt we were not treated appropriately.
I would not recommend this place to anyone, but especially parents, after this experience with the manager. Coincidentally, we went to another restaurant nearby after this and they were so kind to my baby, helping to calm her with smiles, crayons, and silliness. We had a nice meal. This treatment was such a relief, as I had been crying on the street after...
Read moreLooked like a fun little place to grab brunch but we were pressed for time so we asked the host wound we have time to eat and meet our appointment nearby. She assured us we would. We were seated and then another family was seated shortly after us. The wait staff immediately came to their table and took their order and brought them all water. We had to wait a bit then the wait staff came to us and took our drink order but brought no water. We ordered coffee which was brought luke warm. So we asked for fresh coffee. And we waited. Our meals came: my chicken and waffles was quite good and well as my daughter double smash-burger. My wife’s Eggs Benedict was overcooked with no runny yolk. We were almost done with our meals so I had to ask for some water since our coffee wasn’t hot. As we finished our meals the wait staff brought fresh coffee intending to pour into our untouched coffee cups so we had to tell her we needed a new mug with the fresh coffee. So she brings back my wife a new mug and fresh coffee. Nothing for me. I suppose since I asked for water that was supposed to suffice me. As we were clearly done with our meals, my wife has to ask for the fresh coffee to go. When the bill came we had to ask for one of the coffees to be removed since it wasn’t satisfactory nor consumed. The wait staff made a face but honored our request. The wait staff took zero initiative to provide the basics and to top it off the tip was already written in but we didn’t feel it was justified by our (lack of) service. Won’t be back. Cannot recommend based on...
