We have never experienced a waterway lock system. We took a tour boat to see Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. This required passing through the lock system. It was fun seeing the assorted sized boats entering and tying up. I enjoyed watching the locks open to allow water in or out to equalize the water level. System operated by US Corp of Engineers.

This is a great little waterfront where you can go and catch a boat for an evening tour on the lake. The boat lock has lots of activity and is a very safe area in Chicago to visit. We really enjoyed our time and took a boat I’ve done to the lake in the evening!

The Chicago harbor lock was a great place but we did get locked for sometime when we were going on a boat trip to the Michigan Lake. And that did take some time and a bit annoying but they have there reasons.

Inconsistent Harbor Masters. Sometimes they tell you to move down the middle to get to a stop, sometimes you get kicked out for it. Sometimes they will let boats double up on the wall, Sometimes not. Basic rules like mandatory life jackets apply. But just hope you don't get a prix HM that wastes ppls time with making a boat an example or feeling like putting boats on "time out" outside of the lock. Never had an issue with the staff...
