The crown jewel of Art in Chicago. There are plenty of great pieces in the permanent collection plus always check for special exhibitions. Since the Art Institute is a major player, most special exhibitions will come through Chicago. Also, since art must be protected against heat, cold, and moisture, the climate control inside is perfect.

Also, not to be missed are the Thorne Miniature Rooms on the Lower Level. I know, you think that you might be tired from seeing all the fabulous art upstairs. But this permanent exhibit are miniature room displays at a whole different level. All are arranged in chronological order for European and American times. Amazing and the attention to detail is worth a look. For kids, history buffs, dollhouse aficionados, even the woodwork in the group. ...

I always wanted to visit the Art Institute of Chicago but what I encountered at the museum today made me never want to return because I didn’t feel safe here. As I entered the museum from East Monroe St, an African American lady behind me had the most racist and rudest demeanor which she pushed me through to enter. I was shocked this happened at the museum. I’m sure the majority of Chicagoans are friendly but I feel like I needed to write this review to raise awareness among other visitors to make sure similar incidents won’t happen again especially if you are Asian visitors. Since the museum is a crowded place, just stay vigilant about people around you and keep some distance and you should be fine. Hope this...

The Art Institute of Chicago is truly a world-class museum. The collection is breathtaking, ranging from timeless European masterpieces to inspiring American classics and modern works. Every gallery feels like a journey through history, culture, and human creativity.

The atmosphere is well organized and welcoming, and the staff are knowledgeable and always ready to help. The variety is stunning—you can spend hours admiring impressionist paintings, ancient artifacts, or thought-provoking contemporary art.

It’s a place that leaves you inspired and thoughtful long after your visit. An absolute must-see in Chicago for anyone who appreciates art...

This museum was a major highlight of our trip to the magnificent city of Chicago. We went back three times during our week in the city. There is nothing like seeing the actual art in real life; Monet, Van Gogh and Hopper’s famous Nighthawks. I could stand there for hours just taking it in. Don’t miss the Ando room. Had it not been for the audio architectural tour, we would have and that would have been a shame. (You’re welcome ☺️) The museum is immaculate and well staffed. The employees are friendly and helpful, thank goodness because when visiting on a time crunch, they are handy with directions.

Amazing place with a tremendous variety of exhibits. Don't try to see everything in one day. Pick your priorities, plan your schedule, and take the time to enjoy! The current collection of Roman sculpture has never left Europe before and is quite beautifully displayed. The accompanying placards explain the provenance and restoration of many of the pieces. Fortunately we were able to see the PanAfrican display before it leaves and the Impressionist painters are always wonderful. Our lunch at the Cafe was delicious, and be sure to visit the rooftop Members Lounge if you bought a membership!
