The parking area for the Cincinnati zoo is split into two parts: the primary lot and the secondary lot. The primary lot is near the entrance and covered in large solar panels. In addition to providing energy for the zoo they provide shade from the summer sun and shelter from precipitation. The primary lot is large enough that my family, who are zoo members and visit often, have rarely parked in the secondary lot. The only times we've used the secondary lot have been during the Festival of Lights, which is very popular during the Christmas season. The secondary lot is just a standard paved lot. Read moreThe parking lot had attendees who directed you to which lots still had space. The 2 middle rows had a covered area, and most of the rows farther out had some shade from trees. Most of the handicap spaces ( nearest entrance) did not have shade, unless much later in day. I would suggest buying the zoo pass for easy exit, and less people in line for entering. Even though here are handicap spaces, and the spaces are the closest to entrance, you still need to do a lot of walking to the elevator and then across a bridge, and then to the entrance. The cost last time I went was ten dollars ($10) which feels a little high, but I know the costs feed back into upkeep and maintenance and improvement of the zoo that I've loved since I was a small child. The solar panels serve a dual purpose- they collect electricity for the zoo's daily operations, but they also help keep cars cool in what would otherwise be a scorching parking lot.
