Found this article after we saw this amazing artwork, randomly walking down the main street of this old beautiful area in columbia. 🔗 it's near the art museum too. Well placed and meaningful. Artist Blue Sky (born Warren Edward Johnson) is known in South Carolina primarily for his trompe l’oeil murals and larger-than-life sculptures. Many are located in the capital city, but others can be found as far away as Union, Florence, and Darlington (see Old Darlington Public Square). The Columbia native is an alumnus of Dreher High School and earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. His work has appeared nationally – including in the Smithsonian – and among his many awards is South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, which he received in 2000. The Neverbust Chain can be found in downtown Columbia connecting Sylvan's Jewelers, which has been there since 1905, and Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse, which is in the building that was formerly a Kress 5 & 10 store. Created by noted artist Blue Sky, the Neverbust Chain was installed in 2000. If you're like us, you have a strong desire to know why he decided to connect the two historical buildings with a 25-foot chain. According to his website, he did it because "one building looked like it was leaning a little bit."

What is that and why is there a length of super chain joining these two buildings? Yes, that's the "Neverbust Chain" and it was installed in 2000 to connect two very large office buildings in downtown Columbia.

The installation is by local artist Blue Sky (aka Warren Edward Johnson) who is also responsible for the nearby works "Tunnelvision" and "Busted Plug Plaza".

Maybe they're fake? Nope, these are actual steel chain links that were welded together and hand about 15 feet over this small alleyway. According to the artist's statement, "One building looked like it was leaning a little bit."

Check it out (and those other two) in...
