We stayed here for one night. In that timeframe, we had a drink at the rooftop bar on Saturday night and were told (when we ordered a martini) that they were out of martini glasses. There were about 10 people in the bar. Ok...no big deal. Later, we ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio and were told they were out (this is at a bar...out of white wine on a Saturday night). When my husband questioned "you're totally out of Pinot Grigio in the whole hotel?" the bartended stated "not necessarily...I called the kitchen and they're just not answering the phone so I can't get more".
The next morning (Sunday), I attempted to order room service at about 8 am. I dialed and the phone rang 15 times before I hung up. I called the front desk and asked for room service and was put through to the same number that I just called. Again...it rang 15 times before I was brought back to the front desk (Renee). I explained to Renee that I was attempting to order room service but no one was answering. She put me on hold for a moment or two and then came back and told me I was "invited to breakfast at the club quarters on the 16th floor" but that I had to come down to the front desk to get a key and then go to the 16th floor for breakfast. I questioned "so I can't get room service?" and again, rather than answer my question, she explained I was "invited to the club quarters for breakfast"????. So, I get dressed, go downstairs, get the key, go back upstairs to get "breakfast" (which was just the standard continental breakfast you'd get in any hotel lobby and not a full room service menu/options). So now I'm loading up my arms with food to bring down to my husband and 2 children who were back in the room. I got my 2 children cereal and there was no milk! And no spoons! So, they had the little boxed cereals but no milk or spoons to accompany them out for guests to grab.....just bizarre. I asked the girl working in the room if she had either and she explained...."no...we're out of spoons...you can take that one" and pointed to a single spoon on a separate table near the pastries. My response was "I have two children so need two spoons.....and milk for the cereal". She then said "well...I'll need to go down to the kitchen to get the milk and I'll need to wash another spoon".
I can't make this up....they were literally out of glasses and white wine in a basically empty bar on a Saturday night and then you couldn't get breakfast room service, spoons or milk without the staff making it obvious you were a total inconvenience on a SUNDAY MORNING. Pretty odd experience overall at this place. It's like they don't want your money. I would definitely not go back here nor...
Read moreWould never recommend this hotel to anybody. Our problems first started when we checked in. We were told a 2:00 check in would be no problem. When we arrived, the hotel told us that no rooms would be available until atleast 3:00. The girl at the front desk then sent us on a wild goose chase to find a farmers market that we later found out had closed at 1:00 when it was very cold with strong winds outside.
Finally, 3:00 rolls around and we can check into our room. I had booked 2 rooms. It seemed like the front desk staff would have been intelligent enough to look at the reservation and notice that I'm the SPG member and not the person who was staying in the other room that I booked. They were on the 11th floor with complementary water, tv in the bathroom, and a better view.
The worst part of the trip is that we were stuck on the 3rd floor in a room with an A/C that didn't work. It felt like we were in a sauna for the entire two days we were there. We were constantly having to go downstairs to get fresh air outside the hotel. We literally didn't sleep the two nights that we were there because it was so hot and uncomfortable in the room. I found myself complaining to the lady at the front desk at the exact same time as another person. Her excuse was terrible and didn't make any sense and she didn't even try to resolve the issue in any way for us. We were told we couldn't change rooms because it was "too late" because the hotel was sold out.
Another huge inconvenience was that the keys to our room would randomly stop working and I would have to go back to the front desk to get a new key. I know I wasn't the only person staying in the hotel who had this issue as well because at one time when we I went down there, another person was having to get a new key to their room as well.
Finally, the last morning before we checked out, I was unable to even take a shower because we couldn't get clean towels sent to our room. After calling twice and walking around looking for a maid, it was time to hit the road and leave.
If this wasn't enough, when I got home I checked my credit card and there are several different charges pending that make no sense and wasn't given any explanation as to what they were for. The only explanation that I could get was that they are just pending and "it happens" and "it should go away". I will never stay at this hotel for business or a weekend getaway again.
I will also be posting this review on tripadvisor, yelp, and anywhere else that I can think of to warn people to stay far away from the Sheraton Columbia. I will also be sending this complaint to the Starwood corporate and and file a complaint with the...
Read moreI returned to the Sheraton Columbia Downtown Hotel for the third year in a row. I travel to Columbia to attend Runaway Runway (annual fashion show featuring clothing made from recycled materials). I just love this hotel!
The front desk staff was ready for me and my LuLu (Yorkie) when we checked in, quick to get me my key and assist me to my room so that we could relax after our flight. Both our beds were clean and all fluffed-up for us - just the way we like them and my request for my favorite room was fulfilled too! Fantastic! I decided to host drinks in my room for my friends that evening, so I requested glasses, bottle openers and a few things like that and everything was quickly brought up. I wanted to offer my friends some munchies, but not have a meal, so the restaurant's chef created a special cheese/fruit/nut tray made to order and brought that right up too (beautifully presented, just the right amount of food as well)! Anything I needed was promptly brought to me...with a smile - everything just a quick phone call away, so easy...leaving me time to enjoy my stay and visit with my friends!
As always, I slept like a rock and woke up to a beautiful downtown city view with the sun peeking in between the blinds. I had plenty of space in my room and huge bathroom to settle in, move around, play with LuLu and get ready. I didn't watch television, but had one in my room and in my bathroom...so if I had, I wouldn't have missed a beat! I used the iron and the hair dryer too (happy to not have to lug my own with me on the plane).
I enjoyed walking around the neighborhood and appreciated the downtown location, going to the open market just a few blocks up, and the convenience of knowing that if I ventured too far, I just had to call the front desk and a courtesy van would come pick me up within minutes and drive me back to the hotel. The lobby's snack coffee shop always has just what I need too, and I usually end up popping in there for something at some point. Having a few cocktails before (and after!) my nights out on the town up at the rooftop bar are a highlight of my stay and always perfect - rain or shine!!! The bar staff is great, quick and fun...always accommodating.
This year, the one thing that really sticks out in my mind were the courtesy van drivers! Love those guys! So much fun and so friendly. The nearby restaurant recommended for brunch was due to open in 10 minutes...but no worries, my driver took me for a drive around to see some beautiful landmarks (got my photo taken with that huge gamecock statue - what a hoot!). Can't wait for next year! I'll be...
