Strand Vista Park offers an awesome view of the ocean, and of the magnificent houses costing upwards of $15 million. We stopped off to watch the sunset, and were able to find a parking spot facing the vista. The lot is a good size and parking is free. Like many people there, we backed in and waited for sunset. We ended up walking the sidewalk path, which can be done with a stroller, and even down the steps to the beach. There are a lot of steps to get down, but there is a cable car/inclined elevator for persons with disabilities (Strand Beach Funicular Cable Car Access). At a minimum, the funicular will be open to the public during daylight hours on weekends, holidays year-round, and every day beginning Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The Funicular may also be used by families, or for bringing down beach gear, but for further information see the Dana Point website. Bathrooms are available here as well. This location offers an easy stage for yet another romantic, or breathtaking sunset. Get out a chair, slow down, and take in the red and orange hues of the setting sun. We weren’t disappointed, and neither would you.

Yes, the park is nice! It's FREE parking! Dana Point is pretty good for this. One of the best places to watch the sunset. A narrow grassy gentle slope extends between the parking lot and concrete walkway which is mosaiced with ocean colors (transition from beach to deep water) and ocean critters. The view is the beautiful Pacific AND overlooks the multi-million dollar homes so is difficult to see the surf break. In my early day this view was of natural habitat and a trailer park, I kinda miss that. There are garbage cans, bathrooms, and water for people and dogs (and lots of people and dog walkers, surfers, generally cool folk). My Advice: GO DOWN THE STAIRS TO THE BEACH! At low tide and early morning this is the best beach ever. Uncrowded. Good board and body surfing waves, access to the headlands south, and Salt Creek beach north (and a great menu at Young's Beach Shack). Dolphins pods swim by occasionally. For birders seasonally there are snowy plovers, whimbrels, marbled godwits and other shorebirds, and godwits and CA gnatcatchers in the coastal sage around the park. I love Strands Beach and hate to give it away, but....

Its very beautiful. Great ocean views. Beautiful beach. Beautiful walk. To get to the beach you need to be able to walk well and be physically active. There are many steps down to the beach, so you need to be fit. Its great for active people and especially good if you want to do exercises going up and down steps. There is a Fenicula there, but it isn't always working. There are bathrooms and a shower, at the bottom of the steps, close to the beach. There are bathrooms at the top in the car park. There are private communities adjacent to the steps, next to the beach. There is no way to drive a car down to the beach. The car park is at the top. Parking is free. No parking next to the beach. At the very top area is a wild life sanctuary, with walking trails overlooking Dana Point Harbor. You used to be able to drive all the way down to this beach, until housing developers spotted it, and bought the land rights, to build here. A lot of surfers used to surf here.

Gorgeous, sweeping elevated views of the ocean, here. It was a picture perfect day in Dana Point today! The sky was a radiant blue, ocean water was a playful mixture of turquoise & blue colors, & the artistic white clouds were the crowning glory. I must admit I looked down on the large, elegant homes lining the beach, and jealousy reared its ugly head, within me. As you approach the curved railing of the viewing area, you walk over many colorful mosaic ocean fish, inset within the concrete. Massive palm trees, with fronds playfully swaying, added to the ambience. A large parking lot, that's free to park in, had plenty of open spaces, so we had no trouble finding parking. Stairs make their way down the long trek to the beach, but it didn't look like anything my wife & I wanted to tackle today. An electric, one-car vehicle, the Funicular, can take you down to the beach from here, as well.

09.07.24 Orange County owned public park. Dana Point Strand Beach is my go to place to watch sunsets and walk on the water. There's pretty good parking meaning I haven't had any problem finding a place to park. Many come to watch sunset from their cars. Options to walk end to end in the parking lot, or using the funicular (when it's in service) to get down to the beach. It takes about 300 steps to walk down to the beach - good walk down and a good stretch to walk back up to the parking lot. At the beach, there's the really nice and well maintained walkway, or down in the sand - extremely beautiful walk especially on low tide. One of the very best places nature offers and it's absolutely free!!! First time I've seen two poor little bees in the sand - possibly last leg on its journey ❤️

Went here to go somewhere new. First impressions are that it seems like a beach where people of all kinds come together and enjoy time with the people they care about. The beach had sectioned off areas where there is swimming allowed and surfing allowed. Im guessing this was due to mitigate risk of injury. The lifeguard tower also has flags to indicate the danger level of the surf at the time. The beach is not very large when compared to beaches such as huntington. Amazing houses decorate the area and really are inspiring to see. Everyone I talked to at the beach seems to be very happy and upbeat and just good with life. There is also a nice trail you can hike nearby. Great beach, I would come here again.
