Title: Mixed Experience at Davis Cards & Games
Overall, my experience at Davis Cards & Games has been a mix of positive and negative interactions. I must start by acknowledging the friendly and welcoming nature of the owner and other employees, who have always been a pleasure to deal with.
However, there is one employee, a guy with glasses and a big beard, who tends to sour the overall experience. He speaks in a very low voice and insists on payment before allowing you to do anything in the store. While I understand the need for a minimum purchase amount, it can be off-putting, especially if you're just looking to grab a drink or a small item.
I've been a loyal customer and have made significant purchases for my painting tools and figures here. In the past, I used to attend the Sunday paint night, but this particular employee's behavior has discouraged me from participating anymore. He comes across as rude and unresponsive, regardless of how politely you approach him.
On one occasion, I wanted to purchase a drink, but I planned to pay for it after I finished my shopping, a practice that the owner allows. However, this employee insisted on the minimum $5 payment, leaving me feeling uncomfortable and thirsty while shopping.
His demeanor during the encounter left a lot to be desired, resembling a wall or a machine with no regard for emotions. This stark contrast to the lively and kind atmosphere created by everyone else in the store is quite noticeable, earning him the nickname "Squidward at the front register."
Considering the mixed experiences and the potential savings and convenience of purchasing directly from the manufacturer's website, I might opt to take my business there in the future. While I appreciate the positive aspects of Davis Cards & Games, this particular employee's behavior has dampened my enthusiasm for visiting the...

TLDR: gamestore is good for cards,D&D, and board games. If that's your niche, this is your place. Can be costly. Make sure to find your community.
I moved to Davis 2 years ago. Being new to the area and looking for a community. As a nerd, this was the only place in town.
I had a relatively bad experience with the owners of the store after taking second place in a war gaming tournament. The prizes were models. None of which I could use for my army, and when I asked for store credit. I was declined and told that I could either take the model or take nothing. The experience was quite polarizing for me.
With entrance into the play area being $5 per visit, the expenses began to run up fast. Spending $25-50 a month on entry and not including what I spent on snacks was not a sustainable practice for my wallet. I struggled to find the community that I had so wanted. With the pros starting to outweigh cons, I realized this was not a gamestore I felt a community in.
This store has gone through some changes since that time. There are some wonderful people who are employees at the store. For other people in different hobbies, this is a great place for family and children. It boasts a wide variety of board games and card games and tailors its clientele towards Dungeons & Dragons, Magic the Gathering,...
Read moreUpdate: I felt like I should update my review since they opened their new location. Everything below still applies, this is still the best shop in the greater Sacramento area, but now it's even better. They are hosting a ton of TCG tournaments, and they have have regular DnD sessions that anyone can join. The shop is working on a homebrew campaign that sounds amazing and I can't wait to take part. The event space is massive. They have friggin birds, like this place literally couldn't be any more magical, I absolutely love it. The staff helped me craft a deck for the latest pokemon rotation and it's been amazing. It's just overall a very comfortable and friendly environment and I just can't say enough nice things about it.
Previous: Best card shop not only in Davis, but probably in all of Sacramento. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. They have an excellent selection of products. They put on a ton of events.
I've sold pokemon cards here and they are very fair with their pricing.
Best thing is, they don't price gouge pokemon cards and sell them at "market" rate, aka the rate scalpers sell at online. I just bought three packs of the newest pokemon release for 4 bucks each.
I can not recommend this place enough. When people say support your local game shop this is a shop I am...
