Genuinely displeased. There is nothing traditional, or French, about a pastry made with margarine. You want some arrogant hyper-loquacious culinary school refugee to spend 12 minutes crafting a jeremiad? because thatās how you get one. ::::::inhale::::::
Besides cheese and wine there is no more traditionally French ingredient than butter. Iām not (only) being pedantic here, I would never have bought this had I known it wasnāt made with butter. Itās not worth the calories.
āMaybe itās because vegans are a thing?ā Awesome choice if that were the case. But naw man, itās got eggs in it.
āYeah, like you could tellā¦ā seems like a reasonable anti-Karen reaction. I get it. But in fact the taste of butter was so conspicuous in its absence that it prompted me to check the ingredients.
There is no resolved, non-corporate funded evidence that margarine is any better for you than butter. There is no human being on this earth that prefers the taste of industrially hydrogenated vegetable oil with ānatural flavoringsā over butter. These are facts.
There are actual centuries of French culinary tradition and experience that shouldāve led this baker to make the sane choice. Yet they chose the path of pure madness.
In a world so devoid of simple joys, so confounded by hyperreal simulacra and alternative truth, the neighborhood bakery occupies a powerful semiotic space. For them too to be caught up in the insanity, jeez guys Iām just not sure I can ever darken their doorstep again. Hell Iām considering avoiding G street entirely.
Positives: they were very contrite over a visually aesthetic issue (that I neither noticed or cared about) with one of my other tarts that they supersized this one. +3 points for dramaturgy, -6,972,386 points for the I CAN ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE ITāS NOT BUTTER. Wait a minute, is this the Bad Place?
What terrible luck. All the more just to feed to my chickens; though Iām not sure even they have the palate for such a thing as a margarine-laced ātraditionalā...
Ā Ā Ā Read more08/2024 Dropped by on a weekday. It wasn't super busy, but I visited during the afternoon, so that's to be expected. I purchased two baguettes (regular and sarmentine/wheat) and one Paris Brest, which totaled a little over $21.
The breads and pastry were AMAZING.
It is so. very. difficult. to find a good french baguette in the Davis/Sacramento area. This is the first baguette I've had that actually reminds me of the ones I had in France. They have the taste AND the texture just right! They even added their own twist by making a sarmentine/wheat version, which tasted nutty and toasty. Absolutely delicious! The Paris Brest was also delicious. The pastry was light and crisp, and the filling/cream was LIGHT but full of flavor.
The service was attentive, quick, and helpful - both on the phone and in person.
The atmosphere is also very welcoming and relaxing. They have indoor and outdoor seating. You can get a full view of kitchen from the front counter.
Would I come here again? 100%, absolutely! This bakery is as LEGIT as they come! Although the pastries are a bit pricey, with the quality they're pushing out, it's difficult to complain. When visiting Davis, I usually spend my time in the downtown core, but I'm willing to drive a few streets away just to stop by this bakery...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe city of Davis is one very lucky city. For a city to have a bakery like Upper Crust that serves bread that one can taste the quality ,labor of love, and on top of that with consistency is really a treat. Something that some cities do not get to have. Last night I stopped by and purchased two loafs of bread. The first one was challah. Even though you may think challah is a simple bread to make, let me tell you, the fluffiness, freshness and taste is worth it! This challah comes with raisins which adds a hit of sweet making it a real treat. My second loaf was the salted rosemary. It came with the perfect amount of salt and rosemary. The combination of rosemary, salt, and fresh bread will trigger your senses and make you think of all the ways to eat it. You may reach of a quality butter or oil , but if you're like me you'll end up eating it alone because warm bread, touch of salt and rosemary is a simple yet delicious combination. Service is great, the place just opened and will soon be serving coffee. There are sweet items such as cookies and chessecake. The bakery is using what it used to be the radio shack store so there is plenty of parking so dont worry about...
