As a long time storyteller… I went to see “the narrators” at the Buntport …. curious as to why their website was so vague as to what qualifies someone to tell the story on their stage.
I quickly realized that everybody was “6° of separation“ from the host that evening Apparently there was no other criteria.
While the first guy was absolutely fantastic(September 17).
…All the other storytellers apparently did not understand the definition of a story and used their stage time for somewhat of either a therapy session or a rant. One guy’s story went on so long I don’t even think he told it to himself once…before stepping on that stage. He couldn’t even find an ending. so of course it took him a long long time to end what could have been said in 5 sentences
That is too bad. Would love to support indie storytelling venues besides the moth… But this poor excuse for story curation is even less reliable than the Moth pulling names out of a hat.
That said I have been to the Buntport before. It is a clean beautiful inside space with excellent sound. This was just one particular event that was underwhelming at best. On the flip side, the organization of the event was excellent!
Support the Buntport…it is a fantastic long-standing venue. So happy for the variety of theater it offers…even this friends-of-the-host...
Read moreSome things just need to be experienced. That's the case with the Buntport Theater. The most recent production I attended, Best Town, was waaaay too strange and trippy to describe and do it any justice. It was also great (if befuddling) fun. The actors really inhabit their characters, and the writing is as clever and imaginative as it is peculiar -- which is saying a lot. The tech in this show was amazing. I'd say, "amazing especially for a small theater" but that would be selling it short. This really felt like the kind of idiosyncratic show you might see in an off-off-Broadway theater. Very quirky and not for someone expecting Eugene O'Neill or Arthur Miller. This is more Northern Exposure meets Welcome to Night Vale if it had been directed by David Lynch.
I don't know if you can go into a show here knowing what to expect, except to expect something...
Read moreWe went to the Great Debate and it was fun, funny, and a good way to spend an evening. I would absolutely go back if the venue lifted the mask mandate.
The reason I rated it a 3 is because the venue is requiring masks, yet they are not transparent about it by putting a note on their website. The mask mandate has been lifted nationwide for quite a while, even TSA lifted it. If you want to require masks, be transparent and say so on your website rather than surprising your customers on arrival. I personally would not have purchased tickets had you been upfront about your mask policy, and it leaves a sour taste for me that the venue isn't transparent at the time...
