I come here for one reason and one reason only, the Chile Relleno burrito smothered in green chile. Everything else I’ve had here is good. Somethings are as good as I’ve had elsewhere and somethings I’ve had better elsewhere. The rest of the menu really doesn’t matter to me because I will, and have, driven 200 miles out of my way just for this burrito. I love chile relleno burritos! It’s my go to item if I see it on the menu somewhere. I’ve tried a ton of them and this is my favorite. It’s a big burrito, not enormous, but it’s bigger than a burrito from Alberto’s, Filiberto’s, pick your favorite berto’s which is bigger than most burritos. The inside is filled with very tasty rice and beans, but most importantly a very generous portion of a cheese stuffed green chile pepper. It’s lightly battered in egg and deep fried so that there is a little bit of crispiness in many of the bites. There’s enough Chile Relleno to get some in every bite of the burrito along with the beans and rice if you’re paying attention. This is all wrapped in a perfect burrito tortilla meaning it stays out of the way flavor wise, adds a little chewiness to each bite, and holds together throughout the meal without getting soggy or falling apart-the perfect vehicle to convey the tastiness of this burrito. And if that wasn’t enough, this burrito is smothered in one of the most wonderful green chili sauces I’ve ever had. The green chili is a rich brown color and you can see in it pieces of the chili, onions and other seasonings that were cooked to perfection to make this excellent sauce. it’s not a heavy or thick green chile sauce. It’s light, savory and a wonderful compliment to the burrito. Take your time and pay attention to the wonderful blend of flavors in every well balanced bite you take. If you like green chile burritos and especially chile relleno burritos, you need to come to El Taco de Mexico and try this one out. If you have one that you like better, i sincerely want to know where it’s from so I can go try it.
Some of my favorite items are: Chile Relleno Burrito smothered in green chile ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My guide on how I use the 5 star system: ⭐️ = Not good ⭐️⭐️ = Not terrible, but would not get again ⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Solid, but I’d try something else before this again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Really liked it! You should try this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Loved it! Must try I’ll make adjustments to my ratings after subsequent visits. If you see a .3 or .7 it means: .3 = Wasn’t as good the 2nd or last time I tried it .7 = This was better the 2nd or last...
Read moreAuthentic Mexican cuisine that's actually VEGAN and VEGETARIAN friendly!
A hard thing to find because typically authentic Mexican cooking has traditionally incorporated some form of meat, meat sauce, or animal lared, etc for generations.
Note: for vegans and vegetarians ordering your dish. Apparently, the English pronunciation of the word "vegan" sounds like something else in Spanish, which caused some confusion. The woman taking my order didn't seem to understand what was asking when I used the word "vegan." only after, I explained that "vegan" is kind of like being a "vegetarian" she understood what I was asking for. She also clearly understood when I said, "no meat," and "absolutely no meat in my dish." I also made sure to say, "and no meat sauce."
They only speak Spanish there, but they understand those three request: "vegetarian dish," "absolutely no meat in my dish," and "no meat sauce." Just a little heads up in order make things easier. They will go through each ingredient as will if your vegan.
Also, El Toco De Mexico does not add pork to their Chilli sauce, which is both rare and refreshing. So you can get your burrito or dish smothered without worring about meat being used as a spice in yor chilli sauce. However, I would also tell them you want chilli sauce with no meat, just to be sure.
I rarely give a five star review, but the food is that good.
El Taco De Mexico creates authentic Mexican dishes that elevates a blend of regional Mexican ingredients with the prefect balance of peppers and spice that is both flavorful and spicy.
They also don't have to rely on animal lared or smothered meat sauce as a crutch in order to create a flavorful dish.
The service is very personable, friendly, and they have no problem customizing a dish to your liking with each ingredient. Great for those who are vegan and not vegetarian.
I also brought a colleague who is orginally from Argentina, and she thought the food was legit.
What feels like a small local neiborhood institution is definitely on my list for one of the best authentic Mexican...
Read moreStopped in here on a whim as I waited for a friend to meet with me before the First Friday Art Walk on Santa Fe and while I'd walked and driven past this restaurant before, actually walking in the door was a first for me.
Let me be clear: the place is small. Real small - six tables (maybe) and the counter-space. That doesn't count the multitude of outdoors seating, though. As a restaurant I would have liked to see it kept cleaner as there was plenty of dropped food, napkins and other "garbage" beneath most of the tables. The counter-top was clean, though, so that's where I sat.
I don't know what this style of restaurant is called, but it's one where you can watch the food being prepared and I like that. Not that I don't trust most eateries, but these small hole-in-the-walls can sometimes leave you wondering.
The girl took my order when I arrived, but as someone else who reviewed the place mentioned, the staff's ability to command the English language was, let's say, severely limited. And by that I mean I couldn't discuss the dishes, talk about options or ask questions regarding the menu. Even when ordering a drink I wasn't sure about what there was to order, so I ordered a "Mexican" Coke. It was only after I ordered the bottled drink that I saw the Pepsi fountain. I prefer Pepsi.
My food came out quickly and there was a reasonable amount on the plate. For what it's worth, I had a beef-something combo with corn tortillas. Sadly, I was about halfway through before I saw the hot sauce, which was pretty good.
The good news was, the place was packed. Not when I arrived, but by the time my meal was delivered, there was a line to order. That alone spoke well of the place. There was a hot blonde there who kept looking in my direction. I'm going to believe she was looking at me and not past me towards something far more interesting.
All-in-all, it was pretty good, but not great. Will I return? Maybe ... probably. Will it be a destination?...
