I recently visited the Robert D. Ray Asian Garden while in Des Moines for a former friend’s wedding and was completely charmed. Nestled along the Des Moines River, this peaceful garden feels like a hidden sanctuary right in the middle of downtown, an ideal spot to relax between wedding festivities.

From the graceful koi pond to meandering pathways and its iconic red bridge, every corner feels artfully designed and thoughtfully maintained. I found myself unwinding on a bench just before the rehearsal dinner, soaking in the tranquil ambience, the gentle trickling of water, lush plantings, and seasonal blooms creating a perfect urban escape.

Whether you’re pausing for wedding-day photos, casually strolling, or simply taking a breather before or after an event, the garden offers a moment of calm and reflection. The volunteers and staff keep the space impeccably clean and welcoming, and its central location makes it easy to pair a quick visit with a walk or bike ride to nearby reception venues.

I absolutely loved how this garden adds a picturesque and meaningful backdrop to a wedding weekend in Des Moines. It elevated my experience, between ceremony, dinner, and dancing, it was the perfect escape.

If you’re in town for a wedding or just need a tranquil spot to unwind and enjoy nature, the Robert D. Ray Asian Garden is an absolute must,...

A small "Asian" garden with an iconic Chinese pavilion on the eastern bank of Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines. Despite being called an Asian garden, there only seems to be Chinese elements represented in this garden. Not that it's a bad thing--given that most people think of Japanese tea gardens as the quintessential "Asian" garden. The inside of the pavilion is hollow and not decorated, so photos are best taken around/outside of the pavilion. Otherwise, a nice spot to visit to get some Asian looking photos in the...

One of our family favorite weekend walk area. Such a nice scene with flowers blooming in the spring, rock garden, river view, fall season also look amazing here, too. I really amaze at the architecture and designed of this place. Walking distance to botanical garden, women of achievement bridge, rotary riverbank park. I hope we raise enough fund to fix this place and get the ponds to work properly with Iowa weather. I think it's will look a lot better with the ponds and...
