I've lived in Dover for over 10 years and I have never been to the Woodman Museum. Now that I finally have been, I can admit I've been missing out big time! This Museum is rich with Dover, New Hampshire, and Natural History that you can spend all day looking at things. I spent almost 5 hours myself and even then I skipped past some things since I had an appointment. Their Natural History section was definitely amazing, their collection, the amount, the age of it, all incredible. The Human History, unfathomable! For the most part you get to explore the Museum at your leisure, but there are guides who walk you to a couple of the outbuildings. The staff and guides are very knowledgeable and extremely kind. It's as good for small children as any Museum is, but there are animals so maybe better than some. For Adults the Museum is a blast, and I'm sure you'll find they have some history you cannot find anywhere else 😉 Overall if you like Antiquities, History and Surprises, then this is the...
Read moreMe and my girlfriend stopped here on a whim and had a phenomenal experience. we didn’t quite know what to expect when walking in but was immediately greeted at the door by the friendly staff. Our tour guide Bill H was very knowledgeable and you could see his enthusiasm about all the history around him, which made it fun to hear him tell stories about all the artifacts at the museum. The whole thing is not chaperoned by the guide. They give brief stories about certain significant items and descriptions on the set up of the rooms. Then they let you roam free to take pictures and learn about any of the items that peak your interest. My girlfriend recently had back surgery and unfortunately could not enjoy some of the stuff that w required a stair case to reach. On our way out Bill handed us 2 free passes to return for another tour after her back heals. Outstanding customer service in my opinion. I highly recommend you swing by woodman museum and learn a little about a lot and have...
Read moreThe first time I'd visited the museum was when I was 5 years old. I went back today with my kids. I was beyond thrilled to see the polar bear was still there. The museum had thousands of pieces including a full, original building from the 1600s (The Garrison). Essentially it's an American history museum from the colonial period to about the sixties. The main building has: Minerals World war memorabilia Vintage dolls Insect and taxidermy examples (bison, moose, manatee, owls, other birds, moths, butterflies, etc)
The Garrison is full of time period antiques including spinning wheels, cobbler tools, etc.
The third house belonged to Senator Hale who worked with Lincoln on abolition and who's daughter was the fiancee of John Wilkes Booth. It is two floors of pieces from the Lincoln years as well as from the textile period in Dover history.
In short it's worth a visit, or two. I look forward to going back without my kids so I can...
