If you want to explore a lovely small town in North Carolina, Elkin might be the perfect place for you. Elkin was once in the top ten list for “Coolest Small Towns in America,” and it’s easy to see why! Elkin has a rich history and many unique activities, and its location is hard to beat. The town was settled in the mid-1700s but wasn’t officially chartered until 1889. By that point, the community had become an industrial hub, sporting different mills and textile factories. Like much of rural North Carolina, the Yadkin Valley, which surrounds Elkin, featured lots of tobacco farming. As that industry declined, some area farmers discovered that the soil and climate conditions of this area were ideal for growing grapes. Downtown Elkin is now a social district. The focus is mostly on excessive alcohol consumption and very loud live music. There are a few good restaurants and retail shops with limited hours.

Elkin is a great place to visit if you are into pub crawls, tattoo contests, baddest beard contests, and motorcycle rallies. Then there is music with bands named: “The Nude Party”, “Unhinged “, and “Intoxcicadas”.

We live in a small town full of small, privately owned, eclectic businesses. We expected the same experience in Elkin, but we were a little disappointed. There were a limited number of shops open with almost all closed on Monday. Businesses may have a different schedule during non winter months. There are several great restaurants downtown.
