A must see for any visitor to Fairbanks. The buildings are original Fairbanks buildings moved to pioneer Park to preserve history. They are set up as a town with boardwalks. Today they are shops and restaurants, a museum... Early railroad cars are near the main entrance, welcoming everyone to walk through them. The first house made with milled lumber is furnished as it was in the early 1900s. A gentleman dressed in time period clothing will give an oral history of the house and Fairbanks if you are interested. If not you are free to browse on your own. There is a modern playground for children. We were there during Golden days 2025. Buckets of bubbles and Wanda were throughout the park as were coloring stations. Saturday evening we went to Alaska Salmon Bake for dinner. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. Orders are placed as you enter through an archway. The next stop is the salad bar which also has the hot side dishes, In the center is the beverage bar. Soft drinks are included with the meal, alcohol is an additional charge and is in a separate nearby space. Many meals also include dessert. Meals are one entree or several combinations of entrees. The three of us chose to share The Mother Load dinner it came with one salad plate for $69.95, we paid $10 each for two additional salad plates. The salad bar also has hot side dishes. You then take the tray for the entrees to the very large grill area where you are given, 4 or 5 pieces of deep fried halibut and cod, two filets of grilled salmon, one filet of baked cod, and a very large slice of prime rib. Other options were plates of a single entree, or combinations of entrees, crab legs are also offered. During Golden days in July, special events take place throughout Fairbanks. We went back to Pioneer Park on Sunday afternoon for the "Bathtub" race. It was a fun time with boardwalks filled with young and old, locals and tourists. Following the race we took a self guided tour of the SS Nenana one of the original steamboats which was retired in 1954. Inside the ship are scale models of neighboring native villages and early settlements. We are at Souvlaki, we ordered Greek Salad and two Pitacos (Pita tacos) the portions were generous, service was friendly. Outdoor seating is around the corner of the building on the boardwalk. An Ice cream shop is a favorite stop for our grands. Many of the shops are local crafters and artists, there are also several choices for finding souvenirs, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets. You can spend as much or little time as you want. If you are traveling in an RV there are spaces for parking overnight in a specified area. Call the office or directions are on signs in the...

Read moreWe went to Piner Park as part of our ticket to salmon bake. What a Great park area, they had lots of antique machinery, lots of interesting stories on easy to read plaques, some nature with a small duckpond.(there was a small family of ducks, with probably five or six ducklings) Lots of picnic tables, the salmon bake buildings were set up great, good use of electronics so that once we paid they simply looked up our name and served us immediately. We made the comment, that if we ever did a Alaska cruise again, we would start in Fairbanks and give ourselves a couple of days to explore this town. I saw a nice walking path along the river, well-maintained park setting, had some of the stationary exercise equipment along the way. I saw lots of little mom and pop shops for dinner, crapes, and other eating establishments. Pioneer Park had an an area, that included several buildings that were re-creations of the original town, each was a little shop whether candy, saloon, etc. We went to a play, show, at The Palace which was located in the same area. Overall we had a great time, we overheard many others with the...
