I went there just to get some plastic strips and ended up hanging out for 2 hours. I was immediately transported back to my childhood as soon as I walked in the door. There were dozens of completed model kits on display throughout the store as well as RC cars and planes. The model train section is nothing short of amazing. They had 2 railroad dioramas on display. A young child present at the time was thoroughly enjoying the model train making its way around the track (as was I). I was surprised at the variety of model kits available. They had the standard tank, aircraft, and naval ships. But, I was particularly impressed with the selection of the latest sci-fi kits (including Star Wars, Star Trek, and Gundam) as well. Tabletop gamers won't find kits here, but they can get all the tools, adhesives, shaped and sheet styrene, and terrain building materials they need for a good price. They have a good selection of books and tools as well. This is no chain store. It's as mom and pop as it gets. You can feel the history of this place. It has a pleasant soul and character that really comes out when you talk with the friendly and helpful staff. I had several pleasant conversations with 3 of the folks working there. I highly recommend this place to the avid model, railroad, and...
Read moreWe just discovered this hobby shop in late July. Unfortunately, we will never be setting foot inside it again.
My son was so excited to stop in on our way through Fayetteville. He talked about the shop and planned his return to it for an entire month. At last, in late August, he was able to go back. I parked and let him go inside, figuring I had at least 20 minutes to wait.
Instead, my son came back within 2 minutes almost in tears from anger and shock. The person working the store, who I believe was an owner, was having a discussion with what appeared to be another customer when my son entered. This conversation was ENTIRELY inappropriate for ANY customer to overhear, let alone a teenage boy. The conversation involved wishing for someone's death, among other topics. Said conversation was reported to the appropriate authorities, it was THAT bad.
Regardless of heightened passions and personal opinions, it is wholly unprofessional and deeply immoral to conduct such a conversation in a business where other patrons can overhear it, and doubly so when a child walks through the door to shop. If you cannot control yourself enough to greet and mind your manners to a customer, you do not deserve to be in business, and I will not patronize a store that does not respect ALL of...
Read moreI've been going to Hayes Hobby since 2004 and have NEVER had a bad experience. It's family owned so you get that personal attention and it's a very friendly & welcoming atmosphere. They have a very good selection of plastic & balsa wood model kits as well as R/C cars, airplanes, helicopters & boats, Estes rockets and quite possibly the only train store in the area. Their selection of supplies is impressive and should have what you are looking for. My only thing to note is that because they are a small, independently owned shop is that their prices are MSRP so they are going to be more expensive than a chain or big box hobby store, BUT there have been a couple of times I asked if I could get a discount and they did oblige...but not always so you may find...
