We visited on a Thursday morning in late December 2024. There was plenty of parking when we arrived around 9:30AM. There were 3 cars in front of us waiting to get in. We drove straight to Cannon Beach and got a pretty nice spot under a tree near the beach. Cannon beach has great snorkeling if don't have the time or want to pay for the snorkeling tour at the park. We brought all our own snorkeling gear. The trick for us was to snorkel near the rocks on the right hand side of the beach. The water was pretty clear for us as long as you don't kick up a lot of the bottom and messing it up for yourself. The rocks go pretty far out. The best spot was behind the mangrove patch at the further out island. The floor is very rocky so water shoes are also a must. The back side of the mangrove had as many and different variety of fish as we saw in Fort Zachary Taylor and Bahia Honda State Park. Possibly slightly more but that is also weather dependent. It was sunny all day when we were here and kind of overcast and cloudy when we visited the other 2 parks. I still think the snorkeling in Biscayne and Dry Tortugas National park was better. But this was a fraction of the cost. There was plenty of space on the beach for those who just wanted to lay out and sun bathe. This was a much more natural beach and I don't think they sweep it like many other public beaches but I find that way more interesting as it's teaming with wildlife. There was plenty of tree shade and shelters at this beach as well at right by the water. When you walk from Cannon Beach over to the bath houses, there is also benches you can sit on and just look out onto the water. The showers were a bit far away from the beach at the bath houses. The showers are located outside and some shower heads were better than others. They also had changing rooms inside. By the time we left around 11:30 the parking lot was almost full. There were like 8 or 9 cars in line to get in. Overall if we were in the area of Key Largo or maybe even as far as Miami, I'd consider doing a drive to John Pennekamp State Park just to do some snorkeling at Cannon Beach. Just realize this is not your typical "beach" when you hear someone say "let's go to the beach". It's not clean beautiful white sand where you jump and frolic in the waves. This is a naturalist's playground and a chance to explore nature in this very specific biome.

This was a great place for my first experience in one of the Keys. I didn’t realize that the Keys are actually rocky but this area provided a small sandy beach. By far the coolest part of this trip was noticing two manatees swimming within the roped off swimming section. It seemed like they were trying to eat moss off the ropes. The just chilled in the area for a couple hours at least. The water was considered too murky for snorkeling tours the day that we visited but I still felt like it was pretty clear. The beach had a lot of people but I didn’t feel crowded. I’d love to explore more of the park in a kayak but we didn’t have time.

Alright I’m going to be honest, this beach is mediocre at best. As a beach. The state park nearby is phenomenal. This beach is pretty rocky (as all of the beaches in the Keys are) with lots of ants. The water was nice but I found myself yearning to be back in Miami. If you are looking for a comfortable lounging beach, this isn’t it. However I did buy some trinkets from the nearby shop so there is shopping. Oh also there is a cannon! Perhaps that is the draw of the beach? The cannon is cool to look at. It’s just that you can only look at a cannon for so long before it’s not that cool anymore. If you are in the area paddleboarding though it’s worth a stop!

*Located in John Pennekamp State Park* Beautiful park that offers many services! You can go kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkel/scuba. There's also a store on site incase you need/forgot swim gear. The beach itself is a bit rocky (manageable barefoot or bring some swim shoes). The water is calm, perfect for some light snorkeling activities (great for kids or beginners). We came mid May, so the water wasn't too cold or hot. Spent all mid afternoon there, people come and go but it never got too crowded. The restrooms are kept super clean and there's rinse off stations as well.

I’m not sure how anyone could rate this more than a star or two. For starters, there is literally no beach. It’s rock, coral, seaweed, and the smallest bit of sand. There’s no making sandcastles or anything. WEAR SHOES! It also smelled and it was super busy. The water was also so warm it was not refreshing. Would not recommend this “beach.”

Description
Cannon Beach is a small coastal city in northwest Oregon. It’s known for its long, sandy shore. Standing tall in the ocean, Haystack Rock is a seasonal haven for tufted puffins. On a headland to the north, trails in Ecola State Park offer sweeping views of the ocean, coves and a lighthouse. South is Arcadia Beach, with tide pools and a picnic area. Nearby Hug Point has sea caves. Boutiques and galleries dot downtown.
