The museum was underwhelming and in my opinion did not justify a $15 admission fee.
The layout of the space was mainly comprised of a high number of laminate boards telling the important story of the WWII Holocaust tragedy. Although educational and I'm sure a lot of hard work and $ went into this project I felt it somewhat missed the mark on how that message was delivered. It was flat and linear and that should not be the reaction. To me a museum is a showplace that should be filled with original artifacts. This space had next to no orginal artifacts which is a little baffling considering this is a called a museum?
The museum experience should be about transportating you back to that place in history and to some extent feel and see what the victims experienced and real artifacts and lots of artifacts will do that! Unfortunately flat boards will not bring out any emotions. This should be called an educational centre, not a museum. It's probably better suited for kids or school outings.
As well the original boxcar that was used to transport victims to the death camps should not be sitting in a generic parking lot in a stripmall? Yes an actual artifact but then again not presented properly. Really out of place and misses the mark totally.
As well the last part of the tour on the Rwanda genocide was done so amateurishly its not even worth mentioning.
That being said the staff were very friendly, the location was clean and modern and the small sample I overheard from the tour guide seemed interesting and genuine.
Maybe I'm being overly negative but was hoping for so much more. To me the presentation of this historic event could have been done so much better. Im pretty sure funding is not an issue in this area and maybe down the line they find a better creative director or committee or whoever makes the decisions and find a more impactful way to tell this...
Read moreThis was my second time to the Holocaust Museum in Naples FL, but my first time to the new location. I was so disappointed! There is no comparison to the original museum that was located on Tamiami Trail. If you have been to the original museum it is not worth your time or money to see the new one. There really isn’t much there.
In 2008, I walked out of that museum in tears, full of empathy and disbelief. Emotions I never felt before ran rampantly through me and I have never forgotten that experience. I highly recommended this museum for years. The rooms were dim and small, full of artifacts and black and white photographs that left nothing to the imagination. The truth about the Holocaust was boldly told by the display of authentic black and white photos and artifacts.
This past February, 2020, I was vacationing on Sanibel Island with a friend and she wanted wanted to see for herself the museum I spoke so highly of. I knew as soon as I walked through those doors that it wasn’t the same museum. It looked sparse and bright. There was only a few black and white photographs and artifacts. By no means did it tell the story of the horror, suffering, displacement, inhumane acts, etc., etc. the Jews of that time had to endure.
Needless to say, after walking out of the building I looked at my friend and apologized. I was in such disbelief how two museums with the same goals could be so emotionally different. If we want the next generation and generations to come to learn about the Holocaust, they need to put back the museum to the way it was on Tamiami Trail. After all, it all began (the museum) through the eyes of a middle...
Read moreGreat little museum but with way too much opinionated commentary. What happened was terrible and It should never happen again. However it is very frustrating to be told what others should have done with 20-20 hindsight. That is unfair and arrogant. Present the historical facts and skip the lecture!
Also I was very frustrated to arrive and find the door locked with a sign stating all tickets had to be purchased on line. I stood outside going through the process for several minutes when someone opened the door to say he could help me inside! I told him of my frustration and he said it was because of COVID which I understood but did not understand why he waited for several minutes. Also later I saw several come in and purchased tickets at the counter!
My criticism is not to discourage others from attending but to be aware of the content. Also hopefully those operating it...
