This is such an unexpected gem in West Texas!

The fort is very well maintained. Be sure to go to the Visitor's Center first to get some context. Many interesting events occurred here that we never realized. The videos were brief but informative - it's worth taking a few minutes to view them.

We had the pleasure of meeting a member of the Fort Stockton Historical Society - his passion for preserving the many historical sites around the city was refreshing! Let me tell you, they're very busy and I wish we had more time in town to visit the many sites they're preserving. It seems like there are big things in the works!

If we ever pass through Fort Stockton again we would love to come back! Thanks for the...

There are several buildings to look at. The museum is located in one. There is lots of information on the fort, when it was built, deserted due to Civil War, then re- established after. Some artifacts in display. 2 videos are available: one 15 minutes long on the history of the fort and a 5 minute video on Buffalo soldiers. It presents information about the white commander of the unit but almost nothing on the Buffalo soldiers themselves. There was a small, more informative display in a kitchen building, but I needed my flashlight to be able to read it as there was no light in the building. I was...

After arriving in Fort Stockton from San Antonio, it was time for a good night sleep as more driving was on the plate for the following day. However, I was excited about visiting this little gem in the middle of nowhere. Fort Stockton is a small town in the desert where only a couple of hotels and some stores can be found. Oh yes, there is also a Walmart.

Historic Fort Stockton is a lovely place to visit. I was especially looking for the Paisano Pete. It was early morning so I was the only human there walking around and...

Interesting historical site with potentials, but largely underdeveloped. The site has a small museum with brochures covering basic information and history. The museum also has some small exhibits. Overall, the grounds have good signage related to various buildings, with some of them still being open to the public. We stopped there after a long drive, and the site turned out to be a great place to walk our dog and stretch our legs.

We thoroughly enjoyed our group visit to Fort Stockton. Mr. Harper and the folks there were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Yes, a lot of the original fort doesn't remain, but they have done a great job preserving what artifacts and stories they can. It is a great site to stop if passing through west Texas. Huge thank you to Mr. Harper for being a fantastic host. We would love to return again when we pass through.
