I played here on Labor Day in a 2-person scramble with my wife and some friends. The weather looked iffy and before the round, we went to purchase some rain gear for my wife as she accidentally left hers behind... Definitely our oversite, but we were ready to purchase what she needed and move on.
They did not have one single piece for men or for women! Not one!... Not a good sign!
Note - I play 75-100 rounds every year and like to try new courses in my native Florida and around the country, so this wasn't my first time playing in the rain. With the proper gear, a reliable cart, and strategically placed shelters, it's not a big deal.
We had prepaid the round several months ago and were looking forward to playing at "Jerry's Course" as a team, and so we decided to brave the elements and play. As I got to the golf cart, I noticed that there was not a back cover to protect our clubs from potential rain which got me concerned, but the rain had stopped and so we chose to play.
FYI - The course is right under the DFW flight path, so be prepared to have planes either taking off or landing every few minutes. A distraction to be sure.
Overall, the course itself is very nice, but a little boring as far as "scenic," "majestic" or beautiful views". A few holes have interesting elevation drops, there are some which have undulating fairways, and there are a few challenging holes that required some lay-up vs go-for-it choices, and it was enjoyable UNTIL the skies opened up! We tried to play on, but ended up completely soaking wet as the lack of shelters and lack of rain cover on the cart forced our hand and we had to abandon the round after 16 holes. We were not alone as we saw a lot of others racing to find the clubhouse with makeshift towels or umbrellas covering themselves and their golf-clubs. Not a pretty site!
Note - There were also a limited amount of rest rooms facilities (7 & 11), so plan accordingly... We started on 9, and once we passed the facility on 11, we never saw another facility until potentially the clubhouse after 18, but unfortunately - it is not especially close to 18 green... sigh...
The staff was very nice and accommodating , but even without having any rain gear in the pro shop - there was also a disappointing lack of general inventory overall. What was available had prices that seemed to be especially jacked-up, which we sort of expected, but were bummed that it was proven true.
Though we enjoyed our time together, we walked away generally disappointed as we had very high expectations and were very surprised at the lack of attention to detail. If it didn't have the cache of being the Cowboys Golf Club - I would rate this course as a "B ". A medium-to medium-high level municipal course that is overly-priced and would not rise to any extra-special status.
If i lived nearby, it would not be in my normal rotation of courses to play, but on a sunny day i would try it again. Stay away if there is even a hint of rain and be prepared to pay extra for your (limited) amount of Cowboys memorabilia.
FOLLOW-UP: As a follow-up to my previous post. I received a very nice call from Nick - one of the Pros/Managers from the golf course. He was very generous and genuine during our conversation, and I feel like he really cared about my feedback and comments. He even asked my opinion about some things that I did not mention, and i felt like he really heard me and cared about what I had to say. As a result, I'm not going to change my comments above, as I feel that they are accurate, but I would like to add that I will definitely come back and play this course in the future. When a course is run by people like Nick and his staff, it's worth the benefit of the doubt.
I wish the overall experience had been better, but Nick's call was a welcome surprise and much...
Read moreUpdate, I was contacted by the Assistant GM and the GM. Seems as though they did not know who was the manager on duty that told me to leave. He was wearing a mask the whole time, even out on the course when I was confronted. Anyway, they offered me a tee time of my choice with the normal package that includes all food and non-alcoholic beverages. I accepted and played a few Saturdays ago. Also went back and played last weekend at my expense. The golf shop staff were nice, the servers and bartenders were nice and the cart guys were nice. They read reviews and take action. That is good to see in this world today that the Customer is still the one that spends his money and decides where or with who or for what they want to purchase in the way of a product or service.
Thanks Cowboys Golf Club, I'll be back.
First, I like this place. Played 18 rounds here between mid July and mid September in 2018. It is what I believed to be my home course. Grapevine Muni next door had been up till then and is my next choice if I could not get on at Cowboys. Took last year off for some skin cancer surgery and treatments. Lately have been playing here again for the last month or so at least four rounds when they have had an early tee time available.
There have been a lot of staff changes since September 2018. Most of the servers and the pro shop staff are different. Food and beverage manager as well as the GM are new since then.
Stopped in yesterday for a drink and to get some lunch after playing another course nearby. There were no tee times available for early as they booked a tournament for the morning on a holiday weekend?
When I sat down at the bar, I ordered a drink and spoke with the bartender about whether breakfast was still available as it was 11:00 am and they usually start serving lunch at that time. The staff was gearing up for the tournament players buffet lunch on the patio and were a little distracted. The food and beverage manager as well as the GM were there just watching the activity. Most good managers are involved when there’s a big event going on. They asked me if I was playing and when. I said that I had already played. They said no you didn’t, we didn’t have any tee times available. They didn’t give me time to explain that I played elsewhere. They began to accuse me of lying and trying to get a free meal. I told the bartender I had no issues with paying. Gave her my credit card to open a tab.
Had a order of pork tacos and another drink and decided to go outside to smoke a cigar. The patio was occupied by the tournament lunch buffet and they asked that I wait till it was over. I said OK and asked one of the cart guys if I could drive around the course and smoke as the tournament was finishing up. He said sure, just watch for the players that had not finished and don’t slow them down. As I’ve been playing for 46 years, six years in competitive golf, I know etiquette of the course, game and cart use. I made my way out the first hole and stopped to pick up a ball that was spotted in the rough far off the cart path as no one was playing the hole. No sooner had I sat back in the cart the GM was skidding to a halt and asked if I was going to give him a problem. I said no, I was just driving around to smoke and pick up a ball if I spotted one. I also wanted to get a frozen drink at the grill shack when I passed by. I have done this many times in the past. He said I needed to leave.
I returned to the clubhouse, paid my tab and left. Don’t know if I will play or just visit for food and drinks here again as I have many times in the past?
Arcis Golf should send in some Mystery Shoppers to check on their crown jewel of golf course...
Read moreMy wife and I played here last week. We played here two years ago as well. Two years ago I would have given this course a 5/5 review. Last week just fell completely short of the experience we had in the past. Keep in mind this review is mostly based off of the price we paid for the VIP service which was ~230$ each.
The food and dining experience was mostly great. The food/drink was good in the restaurant and we really enjoyed the options out on the course as well. The only knock I can give here was that the service was a bit scrambled in the restaurant.
The practice facilities were very unenjoyable. We hit off of mats at the range and the putting green was in really rough shape.
The golf course - I would rate the tee boxes and fairways a 3 out of 5. They were fine and did not really bother us all that much. The greens were a 0/5. They were just awful. Every green was about 1/2 painted dirt and another 1/2 struggling grass. Any downhill put just never stopped because they were just running on hardpan.
We were miserable out there due to the conditions of the course. We were shocked that when we called for our tee time the week before the person on the phone did not mention any of the shortcomings. They also did not reduce the rate from the normal for the course conditions.
At the end of the day, when you pay almost $500 for two players to play golf and eat you expect more. That means the green fees are probably about $150 per person. I would expect the course to be in amazing shape this time of year for that price. If it is not, the staff should communicate that and let you know if they expect the conditions to improve in the near future.
I went into the pro shop after our round to express my disappointment particularly in the greens. The staff member behind the counter acknowledged it immediately and offered me a $20 gift card. I found that to be a bit disrespectful considering what we paid and what condition the...
