The smoothest and most pain-free pc setup experience, even as the old pc was acting up. I am using my new pc now; all the data, settings and programs have been transferred with no hiccups.
Well, after a few days I began to see the problems:
(1) All my Gmail labels are empty. SFE Tech said transferring labels is hit-or-miss, and implied I should have used folders instead of labels, declining to accept any responsibility. Funny thing is, Google says "In other mail programs you might use folders, but you use labels in Gmail to organize your emails." I had asked SFE Tech to do a complete data backup first. If they had done that, or created an archive for these emails, this loss would not have happened.
(2) Windows search cannot find documents. Again, SFE Tech said this function was hit-or-miss. They did offer to install a program that would replace Windows search, which I appreciated. However, I have has a number of settings and data transfer from an old pc to a new one. and never had this problem.
(3) In doing the restore from system image, they replaced a newer Office product on the new pc with an older version of Office that was on the old pc. I had informed them that I had the newer version of Office on the new pc. Somehow, somebody thought this was not relevant information. When I asked if they would re-load the version I wanted, I got a refusal that started with "As explained earlier...." -- well, it was not explained. However, I had explained what I wanted, which fell through cracks in their internal communications, which they refused to acknowledge.
They asked me to bring in the pc and promised to do what they could, but at the same time, refused to be accountable for any of these problems.

Read moreI appreciate Dan so much! I first went to SFE Tech back in June and was amazed by how much care he put into everything. He is very transparent with his whole process, clearly explaining everything to allow me to make informed choices, and even sending me a video recording of the repair, with the reasoning that it could be helpful to show to a repair person in the future to pinpoint if anything went wrong so as to better fix it (but there were no issues and he fixed my phone even better than I had expected possible!).
From that experience I know firsthand he is very good at working with a huge breadth of technology. I have a very old phone, and he demonstrated a lot of knowledge about the specifics of repairing it, while also being transparent about which aspects of repairing it he (understandably due to just not that many people having my phone model) didn't have hands on experience with doing before, and did a very careful yet quick job of skillfully repairing it.
I just came to SFE Tech again for a different issue today, and yet again he was incredibly kind and went above and beyond. Also, both times his prices were very reasonable compared to so many other tech repair places I've been to before. I hardly ever review anything, but I really want to express my gratitude for what a great experience I've had here, I'll definitely continue going to Dan with any tech issues...
Read moreMy machine was under attack and I brought it to Dan at Rubber Duck and he was fantastic. He examined and diagnosed the problem and then fully explained what he needed to do to repair the situation. Although I am a very experienced computer user, (been working on PC's since 1985) Dan carefully explained everything in easy to understand English, (not in a condescending or arrogant tone) told me the approach that he would like to use, what parts I would need (a new hard drive), and gave me firm return date for my system. (which he upheld)
He was thorough, competent and kind, and the prices were incredibly fair. I had my system back in two days, and upon pick up, he fully explained everything that he did, again in very easy to understand terms, and discussed with me how I could prevent the problem from happening again in the future.
This was a fantastic experience and I highly recommend Rubber Duck Computer Repair to anyone, especially people who have little or no knowledge of the computer inner workings. This is the first time in 40 years that I have had to have someone else take care of a computer issue, so I admit I was a bit leery of having somebody else work on my system.
