Great shop, cool people, good resources such as singles. But… the markups are atrocious.
A single MH3 booster is $12. Each pack should be roughly $7. Buying a bundle makes each pack worth $7. Selling a SINGLE pack for $5 more is crazy. Over to the precons in which the price of one of them is valued at what TCGPlayer has each single total of individual cards. They price that around the “value” of what’s inside when, after the hype dies down, the prices of these cards tanks significantly. A $40 precon, for ~$70 online, is $120 here. That’s close to a 40% markup disguised behind “well the value of the cards inside is $220!” Okay dude lol. You can buy two of those for $20 more than what they sell in store online. The value of what’s inside will inevitably decrease significantly, but they won’t tell you this.
Marking up pricing of products based on the “value” of what’s inside is dishonest. Being in this business, they would need to understand that prices for cards fluctuate, rising and falling constantly. I have a feeling that they know this and it bothers me that, instead of looking out for the community in which their shop is based around, they opt to put more cash into their pockets.
Now I’m not talking about small markups, no. Of course, I would LOVE to support local and pay extra to get something on the spot. But almost 40%-50% markups is a slap in the face to anyone who walks in. This tells me that Greg’s Games does not care much about their customers but rather how much money they can take home instead. Using as an example still, they could choose to sell a single play booster for $10, a net positive still, but they would rather put the $2 extra there because it’s much more income and I believe that it’s more important to profit for them than to have a shop that is truly passionate for the hobby in which they are based on.
Do your research online first. Find pricing, compare, and make the best decision for you. If the price is too much in store compared to online, don’t buy. If the price is reasonably marked up and you can snag it, then...
Read moreDrove over an hour to Greg’s Games for a competitive TCG event and regretted the experience. Might be one of the worst managed Cups I’ve been to. The store foolishly tried to host two major TCG events on the same Saturday and it was a chaotic experience. Firstly, they capped entry to only 16 players (PTCG Cups usually have a minimum of 24 players compete on average) because they wanted to use tables for the other event; this meant that some people drove over an hour to get turned away at the door for not having preregistered. If you’re going to severely limit your event sizes, the player caps should be emphasized on the events page. Secondly, it was not clear to many players until the start of the event that we were playing “best of 3”. Typically this type of event is “best of 1” until top cut; good to emphasize this on the events page as well. Thirdly, start times for matches was not clearly announced nor did the organizer make it clear that rounds were starting. There were several occurrences of players waiting to start before realizing that the timer had already begun for the match. Fourthly, the organizer had made a huge mistake and had told all of us players that there were only going to be 4 rounds before top cut. This is a huge deal. Players make decisions about rounds based on their standings and this cost me getting into top cut. This is a big no-no amongst organizers and it really upset the majority of players within the event. Some had even left already without realizing there would be a fifth round. There were other things wrong with this event but I’ll cap my review at these four points. Fortunately I was able to speak to an employee and get a refund for the entry fee, but this experience has soured my opinion of Greg’s Games and I will not be driving out for future events they host. Hopefully they can learn from this chaotic experience and partition store events to one...
Read morePLEASE READ EDIT BELOW THIS REVIEW As a repeat customer who has spent considerable money at this store, I was very unhappy with my experience. When I walked in, the lady and gentleman behind the counter just stared at me as I walked to the kiosk. Every customer who came in after me was properly greeted. When I placed my order, the person who processed my order did not inform me of any coupons/discounts that I’d accumulated on my account. On top of that, the store did not provide me with a top loader for a $90 foil card. It wasn’t until I insisted twice that the gentleman behind the counter gave me one. As stated earlier, I’ve given a fair amount of my time and money to this store, including the purchase of a $300+ MTG bomber jacket during my last visit, and I never expected to be treated the way I was today. Even more disheartening is the fact that I drive between 45-50 minutes just to give this store my business. I likely won’t be back after this.
EDIT Greg, the owner of the store, personally reached out to me via email to apologize for the actions of the aforementioned employees, and assured me that they are being retrained as to prevent something like this from occurring in the future. Most store owners won’t do this, but Greg went the extra mile to ensure me that experiences like this are not what he and his store are about, and his professionalism as a store owner is second to none. For these reasons, I will continue to patronize Greg’s in the future, and I would recommend anyone else to...
