Lamies Inn and The Old Salt Restaurant — Attraction in Hampton

Historical charm near all the beaches. Perfect. I was desperately trying to find a place to stay 4th of July week that would welcome our four legged kids. We stopped in for dinner one night and asked about availability and pets. No problem! I booked our week right away. Then I had to adjust our reservation a few days before our stay. No problem! I also needed to check in late. No problem!

The BIG problem. While they claim to be pet friendly, it's misleading. Their policy is that pets can't be left unattended. We were not told this when we made reservations IN PERSON or when we checked in. So, if you're a couple on vacation you can forget actually going out together unless you can find and pay extra for doggy daycare. Who goes through the trouble of finding a pet friendly hotel, paying a pet fee, and then paying for boarding while on vacation? Not to mention none of the places in the area are open on holidays, such as the 4th of July, or past 7PM. This isn't pet friendly or reasonable at all.

Don't walk them anywhere near the building either, that's a no no. I had walked them in an open area out back, but there is no receptacle for waste except right next to the building entrance which is where I was informed that I shouldn't walk them near the building. Put a receptacle in the dog walking area then.

We got the impression that dogs are tolerated, but not particularly welcome. We've stayed in many upscale and tourist class hotels with our dogs and have never experienced anything like this. They should just not allow pets or have a block of pet rooms together so pets and their people can stay worry free. It's ok for babies to cry, kids to screech, but oh my god if a dog barks for a few minutes it's a problem. Our dinner at The Old Salt was interrupted because our dogs barked "for 5 minutes and then stopped". They stopped, it wasn't late, but I had to abandon my dinner that I had paid for.

We had to abandon our vacation entirely as a matter of fact. It was either go home because no boarding was available on the 4th or pay to sit in our room and do nothing. We could sit at home for free, so that's what we did.

I was happy to give this place 5 stars, but the pet policy and how our situation was handled takes it down to 2 stars and that's being generous.

I would feel a lot different if we were apologized to by a manager. Or if they had been less ridiculous over a few minutes of barking. We did receive a form email asking for feedback about our stay. I responded with a few suggestions on how they could be more pet friendly and of course expressed how unhappy we were about the situation. Still no apology or response. Very poor...

So the family and I went here on a saturday in august. The place was busy. We had to wait about 40 minutes to be seated. The staff was very polite. The place is large and very old fashion. They will bring you bread and butter while you check over the menu. They also bring a Maple butter that was very good. My in laws both got clam chowder. They said it was pretty good. I got the Nancy's Carolina moons appetizer. Fresh chips with cheese and bacon and scallions on it. It was good. Needed a little more melted cheese. As the the main dish. My wife got the chicken ceasar wrap. It was ok at best. Chicken was a little dry and the ceasar dressing wasnt the creamy kind it was more of the oil based kind which we dont really care for so for her it wasnt that good. My father in law filled up on The soup so he didnt eat his turkey Reuben. But it looked good. My mother in law got a smoky bacon burger. She asked for it well done. I think it was almost a hockey puck. The fries she said were bland and didnt have any flavor and kinda soft like they had been sitting in a warmer for a while. My daughter got the kids kraft mac and cheese and man when you looked at did it look dry and like it wasnt mixed really well to get the cheese dissolved proper in with the pasta. The only dish I think that was really well made was mine which was the cheese tortellini in lobster sauce. It was really good. I would get it again if we every go back. But 1 out of 5 meals being good isnt a win factor. I hope this review helps people make there own decisions on weither they go to this place or not. It hard to say if it was just a bad night for the place or if they were understaffed and cant handle the work load as they did have a hiring sign outside. I have driven past this place a hundred times and always thought of stopping in because it has that "welcome" look to it but always continued on my journey to wherever my car wanted to go. Well last night June 11th, my sister and I had just left New England Dragway in Epping NH and I remembered that there were restaurants on Lafayette Road. We were stopped at a red light right next to Lamies Inn and I mentioned to her that this place looked really cool so I turned around and pulled into the parking lot. The dining tent was set up with those fire heaters all around and pretty outdoor lights all over and it had such a quaint feeling to it like an old village feel. However we decided to eat indoors. WOW, I love all the wood and exposed beams and old fashion diamond shape windows. I immediately felt cozy and at home. Beautiful stone fire place and candle like lightings and two enormous chandeliers in the dining room. Simply beautiful... After mulling over the menu (I wanted Everything on that menu) but ultimately chose the Fish and Chips with Clam Chowder. Oh my goodness, the Clam Chowder was one of the best that I have ever eaten. It was so thick and loaded with potatoes simply the way I like it and full of flavor. The Fish and Chips was Awesome. I don't know what batter they use but it was SO light and crispy and delicious and so were the french fries. I promise myself that I will stop in again because this was a total food enjoyment experience. I may even venture to stay a few nights at Lamies Inn, just because... and they even take AAA and AARP. I whole heartedly give The Old Salt at Lamies Inn a 5...
