I’m deeply saddened to give such a low rating, but I think some people and the store should be aware of this situation.
I have been shopping at Second Glance for many many years — I still remember when it was on Cross St in downtown Harwich Port. I look forward to searching for good finds and feel happy knowing that I am supporting the local food pantry.
Earlier this month, my mom and I were going on our monthly thrift shopping trip to Second Glance and a few others in the area. My mother is in need of accessibile parking, and therefore has a handicap placard. On this visit, we parking one of the two handicapped spots. I was driving as it is easier for her to be a passenger in a car. To start, there are two large plastic barriers next to the building where the 2 handicapped spots are. My mother couldn’t open the door, so I had to pull up to let her out and back into the spot. I put the handicap placard in a visible spot in my windshield and exit my car and IMMEDIATELY heard banging on the window from the thrift store next to me. One of the volunteer associates was telling me that I couldn’t park there because it was a handicapped spot (through the closed window, by the way). I told her “I have a handicapped placard” and pointed to it hanging in my car. She rolled her eyes and said “okay” and proceeded to do whatever she was doing inside. I think she assumed that I was either a) oblivious to the marked spot and/or b) abusing the handicapped spot/placard.
I entered into the building to shop and encountered her — I smiled, trying to be friendly but recieved a scowl in return. I instantly felt uncomfortable shopping there for the first time ever. My mother felt discriminated against as her reason for having a handicap placard is not one obviously seen by others. It is NEVER okay to assume that someone is abusing their LEGAL AND VALID handicapped placard, especially coming from a volunteer whose store supports an inclusive community food pantry.
This particular volunteer has made my mother and I uncomfortable before when we requested to put back an unmarked item as the price was too much for us to pay at the time — she turned around from behind the counter, looked at us up and down, and said “what’s wrong with you?” with a scowl. This was not said in a friendly manner, in any way…
I do not feel comfortable sharing the name of this volunteer but I encourage the volunteers of Second Glance to receive training on invisible disabilities (disabilities that are not physically or obviously seen) and common courtesy towards customers and supporters of the...
Read moreAmazing mission! They are supporting food pantries from Plymouth to Provincetown. Volunteer staff are remarkably friendly, committed, respectful, amusing and So willing to help.
Inviting, large space that accommodates every category a Thrifter would want. In fact, it's deceivingly expensive with even a giant furniture room in the way back. Front of the store includes pristine household items that may even be donated by manufacturers because they certainly don't look secondhand. Yet the prices are low and consistent by category.
Their service counter is large and inviting. Process of checking out was exceptional and they made it easy for me to drop off some donations. Every member of the staff was obviously committed to supporting their mission For Cape Cod food pantries. They shared that every dollar of sold merchandise feeds for people. Imagine how great that outcome is?
Beyond happy that we decided to stop. We left with a plethora of new favorites to bring home. No question we...
Read moreMy Mother shops in this store every year when she visits the Cape, its one of the must stop destinations. So like in the past she went in to do her browsing. Apparently they still have a mask policy in place, which is ridiculous at this point, everyone knows there no science behind it. My Mother has had a doctors note that she can't wear a mask due to breathing issues, and this is from the beginning of COIVD and stores must accommodate medical disabilities under title II, and every store except for a few crazy book stores in the past two years allowed the accommodation, because it is the law. When she told the workers this insisted she call the main office and tell them to end the mask policy because they are tired of wearing the masks as well. She called the main office and the woman was so incredibly rude and she admitted knowing the law but didn't care. As long as this store discriminates against people with disabilities they will not have...
