I’ve never written a negative review but after choosing Camp Hatteras RV resort in Rodanthe based on YouTube video reviews that painted it in such a positive light, I feel compelled to share that wasn’t our experience unfortunately. While the location is great, and some of the staff were very nice, management may want to consider some of their policies and the consistency in how they enforce them. We called the day before our arrival to see if we could get a spot near our friends who had arrived a couple of days earlier. They had reserved the same type of sight at the same rate as we had. The campground was nowhere close to being full and we were told if we had wanted to be near our friends we should have paid the $25 fee in advance to reserve a specific site. She then told us that next year we will need to pay $25 to have a spot near our friends. Again…there were plenty of available sites in the premium price range that we had reserved so it shouldn’t have been a problem to accommodate our request. We weren’t asking to be right next door to them…just close by. On the day of arrival, we had traveled more than 6 hours and arrived at 12:35pm. We pulled up and were told we couldn’t enter until 1pm and they wouldn’t allow us to park in the staging area to wait 25 minutes where they had multiple lanes open. We understood that check in is at 1 and we would have understood if they were still waiting for people to leave but there was hardly anyone there…the campground was probably not even a quarter full. We were then told if they let us in early we would expect to be able to arrive early next year and we were asked to leave the premises. We drove 20 minutes down the road before we could find a place to turn around and go back. At check in, they assigned us a spot and we drove to set up only to discover we would be directly in front of the garbage dumpsters…our outdoor setup would have been literally feet away from the smell of garbage. Again…there were plenty of other open sites. When we complained about the site they did agree to move us but weren’t very friendly about it. Several days later, we saw a group of RVs that had traveled together and were set up together. They told us they did not pay $25 fees. We also saw RVs checking in before 1pm and given spots on arrival. Overall we were really disappointed with our experience at Camp Hatteras. To be told if we pay $25 next year to be near our friends or if we arrive early next year we would expect to check in early felt as though we were being talked down to or punished in some way. They don’t need to worry about our expectations to stay near friends or arrive early next year because we won’t be returning. And we won’t be recommending this place to our many friends with RVs. This is a whole different feel than other camping resorts because for just a bit more money you can basically have a site just 50 yards from the dunes. We were lucky enough to get site #57
All of the sites, as far as I know are full hookup however cable is an extra charge. The layout of the campground is great and the spots are quite large. There are portions of the campground that seemed like the sites are packed together tighter than others but it’s not as bad as some I’ve been to. Unfortunately you cannot reserve a specific site and you are given the site when you arrive. Check in is at 1:00 (not 12:55 - they are strict about that) and I recommend getting here just at check in time to hopefully secure a better spot.
My only issue with the layout is actually the angle of the spots based on the roads - which are all nicely paved! Not stone! The sites are all back in and come off the road at a steep angle making it quite difficult to back in (jackknife) a large rig if you have people setup across the street from you. The roads are narrow and people commonly park just off of them making it worse. If the sites were “less perpendicular” to the road, this would be less of a problem.
This is a beach resort... there are no planned activities by the campground. They do have a nice indoor and outdoor pool, basketball, tennis, mini golf and playground. Dumpsters are conveniently placed around the property. There is a camp store with most of the essentials but plan to pay 1.5 - 2x more. There is a discount beach store just outside the campground and a great donut shack! A mile North is a Liberty gas station with a great supply of groceries.
The several shower houses were in good order and maintained. They do get increasingly dirty as people come off the beach for the day. There is also a large pavilion at the beach where they do tie-dye but there was no information given about this.
The beach is clean however the sand to setup on is quite skinny do to erosion. You cannot have fires on your campsite however many people would go out on the beach at night to have a fire. Just follow all of the NC DNR guidelines on this.
The only bad... there is sand everywhere and mosquitoes are savage. Take a ton of torches to burn citronella when you are outside. They are even on the beach when the wind is calm and speaking of wind, while we were here, it never really stopped. Awnings and tents had to stay stowed for 1/2 of our stay. You can also get a site on the sound side which is less windy but a long walk across Rt12 and to the beach.
I would certainly stay here again if we wanted to camp the Outer Banks. I give the resort a 9/10 only because I wish they had some planned...
