Was recommended to do the “visitor paddle” by a friend and member of the group. Highly enjoyed our experience and definitely recommend this experience or joining the club if you’re a local. This is something you won’t find on a “Maui must do” website and you get a very local experience. By reading reviews, it seems like the experience has changed slightly over the years, here is what we did 2023: Arrived 20 minutes before the scheduled time & were given some paddling instructions and assigned a canoe. Led in a traditional Hawaiian chant to welcome the sun. Paddled ~15 minutes and landed next to Kealia a “Loko i`a” (fishpond). Got to see this sanctuary which is being restored and the caretaker, who happened to be there, gave us a great history of the Hawaaiin “Loko i’a” and the volunteer work he is doing. There are honu sea turtles who often bathe on the rocks here. We then left to paddle back to shore. We were told they often stop halfway to let people swim, but it was extremely windy and we all had to work hard to get back to shore. They then had lots of breakfast treats and coffee and you could stay and chat with everyone. All of the members were so friendly and even gave us advice on what to do on the island. A mandatory $40 donation is needed to book, but it is going to a great cause. It is tax deductible, but thought it was strange to be called a donation since it was required. Although you don’t need to be in amazing shape, this is a physical activity and they do expect you to help paddle, so if you’re just wanting a joy ride, this might not be an activity for you.

This canoe club offers visitor paddle outings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We've done it twice and had a great time! You have to paddle as one and will stop a few times for breaks or to watch whales. The first time our "instructors" (club members) were quite strict, and the second time they were very chill. I guess your experience will depend on who is leading your canoe.

If you are in to paddling, this is a must do experience. Join the club members for a paddle on Tuesday and Thursday AM's. Great cultural intro as well by a local Hawaiian. When the paddle is over cross the street to the Sugar Beach Coffee Shop for some coffee and baked treats! Only advice is get there by 7AM so that you get a spot (it can get pretty busy).

Joining the Kihei Canoe Club's visitor session is an absolute must-do for anyone seeking an authentic Maui experience. From the moment you arrive, the club members welcome you with genuine "aloha" spirit, making you feel right at home. The morning begins with a brief introduction to the outrigger canoes and a beautiful, traditional chant to greet the sunrise. Out on the water, you'll feel the rhythm of paddling in unison with your crew. Our knowledgeable guides shared fascinating stories about the waʻa (canoes) and local marine life. We were lucky enough to see several sea turtles up close, which was truly magical. The trip perfectly balances physical activity with peaceful moments. There's time for a good workout, but also opportunities to relax, take in stunning views of Haleakalā, and even swim. Afterward, the club provides complimentary home-baked treats and coffee, offering a chance to connect with the friendly volunteers. This experience offers more than just a paddle—it’s a chance to immerse yourself in local culture and community. I highly...

This was such a unique experience that our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend! We would do it again if we return to Maui. The seniors/club members take great pride in their canoes, sharing of traditions. It was so fun for us to be on the water. We had a great morning and saw lots of whales. We were happy to support the club with a $40/person "donation". Since you have to arrive by 6:30 am, it was a nice surprise to have some treats and beverages when we returned. Keep up the great work! We appreciate your time Tuesdays/Thursdays to...
