Van Leeuwen Ice Cream — Attraction in Houston

I’ve come to this exact location on 3 separate occasions over the past year. (Each time thinking to myself, “it’s probably gotten better and I just had a one off experience.” Today will be the last time I ever go again. On three separate occasions, I have witnessed unsanitary behavior. No gloves, no washing hands. Loose hair hanging down near the ice cream while scooping. I actually had a hair in my ice cream today!!!! The time before, the gentleman used his bare hand to steady my scoop of ice cream. I told him that he just touched my ice cream. He was actually offended that I asked for a new ice cream cone! The time before that, upon entering, the gentleman behind the counter was on his phone. Ignored me for a few minutes, didn’t wash his hands and didn’t put gloves on, and grabbed the waffle cone bare handed. This ice cream may be fabulous, but the staff is not. 3 separate occasions, 3 separate employees, and all practicing unhygienic food safety. This shop has delicious ice cream. It's creamy and rich. They have really complex flavors like french lavendar and honeycomb as well as standard yummy ice cream flavors like brown sugar cookie dough chunk! I had praline butter cake, and my spouse had brown sugar cookie dough chunk. We both enjoyed our ice cream thoroughly, and it was about $12 for 2 small dishes. We were happy w/ the portions for the price, quality, and location. My only critique is there isn't very much seating except for a strange marble built in-bench and 2 small tables. No chairs, and not built for larger people. There are also 2 small marble slab counter-like things you could set something on, but not much comfort wise. Surprisingly, even though the employee warned of the potential awkward or weird flavors and textures of the item, in this case, a milkshake, while she was right I believe due to the great quality of the ice cream the unique flavor was not off-putting, but fairly pleasant and refreshing!! As for the other ice cream products ordered, their eccentric flavors may not be for everyone all the time, but I see they're certainly worth a try because again, that quality is just so high I believe!!! In my case the sweet corn ice cream was unexpectedly savory which to some is not a bad thing at all. I was pleasantly gladdened, the mango sticky rice cream was silky and mild all while not being cloyingly sweet!
