If you like history and/ or art you will really appreciate this museum. Admittedly I am biased since I worked there 8 years, but I also really enjoyed telling people the story of Gutzon Borglum. Gutzon Borglum was a fascinating fellow and this museum will tell you all about his life before and during the Rushmore project. Without Borglum mount Rushmore simply would not have existed.
I have 5 small kids now, and I probably won't take them through until they are a little older, but for anyone high school and up who enjoys a good story, Borglum's life provides it.
I also noticed that one of the reviews mentions the wand sticks that were hard to use, and I agree they were hard to explain too. They are gone now, and a different and I believe better system...
Read moreMy wife and I visited this museum while in the Rapid City, SC area. It is heavily advertised all along the interstate as something you "must see" BEFORE visiting Mount Rushmore. We did and were not impressed. The lady at the front desk didn't act like she wanted to take the coupon we had and informed us that it would only apply if we took the more expensive tour. The coupon made no such designation but we opted for just the Borglum film and smaller tour. The exhibits were interesting and informative and gave you a much better sense of the individual who is responsible for Mt. Rushmore. Borglum was a much more well established artist than I ever knew. It was interesting to learn about his experience at Stone Mountain, GA and that Rushmore was not his first encounter with sculptures this large.
