Came here with a friend while on vacation; chose this place because it had a lot of positive reviews and some very appetizing dishes listed on the menu....but that doesn't mean the food is as appetizing as listed.
I had ordered a 16 oz. prime rib as I was very hungry and wanted something heavy in protein. Ordered it as medium-rare with a side of rice and a small salad. Salad came out first and it was, as expected, a normal salad (no complaints here). However, my issue came with the main dish: the prime rib. The prime rib came about 15 minutes later...and it was the saddest prime rib that I've seen. The meat looked as if it had been boiled and had no attempts made towards searing it or even giving it a decent crust. The inside was cooked to the border of medium to medium well instead of a medium rare as requested. Tasted very bland. The Au Jus looked like beef broth that's been darkened for fake authenticity, and the horseradish was more creamy and less of a bite than it should've been. Wild rice was decent, though only as a temporary palate changer. Waste of $27.
My friend ordered the buffalo ribs and the result was: boiled til tender, but given a baked finish and drizzled in sauce. He said it didn't taste great, but it was edible enough.
The only saving grace of the restaurant was the interior decorated with western/cowboy style decor, and the waitress, who looked like she really enjoyed her job (a positive praise for her!).
In conclusion: Never coming to eat at this place ever again. I'm aware that its a tourist town and that means good business for restaurants like Ruby House. And a touristy place will overprice the items for the business to run, however, that should not be an excuse for the quality of the food to drop. Poor quality of food = loss...
Read moreToday, we arrived to the Mount Rushmore monument in Keystone. We took a bunch of photos from many angles. After resting a bit, we grew hungry and began discussing where we would eat.
Our decision was to eat at Ruby House. It was a saloon setting and had on old western theme with furniture and paintings from that time. Historical paraphernalia, like documents/letters from presidents, covered the four walls.
Two drinks on the menu sparked my interest: the Roy Roger’s and the Sarsaparilla. After inquiring about them, I ordered both. Our server told us a Roy Roger’s is cherry Pepsi with grenadine. The other self-proclaims it’s “The Granddaddy Of All Rootbeers” on its label. This Saparilla is made with cane sugar.
Dad and I ordered the same thing, Bourbon Ribeye. And boy, THIS was the right choice. One of our sides was soup. Pay no attention to the soup. It was alright but got eclipsed by the other items. In the words of my dad, “the Bourbon steak had a sweet, soft glaze that gives a flavour which pops. The two blend very well.” One item stole all the attention: the mashed potatoes. This was our other side. It came with the most delicious brown gravy I have ever tasted. This without a doubt belongs in a Michelin restaurant. Our server bragged that the chefs make it from scratch.
We took a slice of raspberry cheesecake for dessert. We picked at it together. Nothing wrong with it.
We only paid a mere $94 USD. This was the best restaurant for value at its price. More than worth it.
Ruby House was an experience words can’t truly describe. The historically accurate setting of pioneering South Dakota and the phenomenal food at such an affordable price. To do it justice, you have to come...
Read moreWe were skeptical with some of the reviews but there aren't as many places to eat around here so we thought we would give it a try. The ambiance alone is perfect considering the location! And the food WAS actually very good!! I'm giving this a 5 star because... I know someone mentioned the tourist trap and price but seriously what do you expect and I don't know where they come from but we thought it was priced well for what we received and for a tourist, as most are around here, it's a perfect restaurant to immerse yourself into a bit of history. And the food was wonderful as the service, so my 5 star is to spread the word to rate them higher for people to actually give them a try!!
We are a family of 5 and ordered the fried pickles....AWESOME and crunchy! The meatball soup was VERY good!! Flavorful and we wish we had bigger bowls of it! Our meals proceeded with the buffalo chopped steak which was DELICIOUS, the fish and chips we hear was just ok but that's coming from a 12 year old, and the fettucine alfredo was very good as well, along with the trout. It was a nice cut, and cooked nicely, not overcooked and seasoned well. I would've gotten a steak but my steaks are always better than others but after seeing a couple ribeyes on other tables, I kinda wished I tried one. The chocolate lava cake finished it nicely. Our server was very attentive and did a nice job with his service, and the bussers clearing the table did a great job too! If you're not sure whether or not to stop in, we think you...
