We visited here yesterday and were very disappointed in the quality of the staff manning the aerial course. We had our two grandsons (ages 8 and 10) with us. Both boys have done aerial courses before as recently as a week ago. The staff provided very little instruction on the use of the equipment. And they did not check the children's understanding or competency in the use of the equipment. There are several courses to choose from, but no instruction was given regarding the difficulty of the various courses. Our 8 year old was allowed to enter a moderately difficult course where he became trapped on the 4th obstacle because he wasn't able to move his carabiner. My husband was working the same course but at this particular obstacle only one person could be on the platform at a time. After several minutes I was able to find a staff member to help the child. That's when the staff member suggested that they try an easier course where my grandson could be assisted by his grandfather at each platform. Unfortunately the boy was so frustrated by the experience he wouldn't continue. Our 10 year old grandson was able to work the equipment and was flying through the course until he came upon an obstacle that he didn't understand. It involved having to pull a rope to bring the obstacle toward the adventurer. He called for help but no one responded. He ultimately unbuckled his harness and jumped from the platform. No staff member ever noticed his distress or even questioned how he exited the course. When we spoke to the management about the issues they offered a rain check. Considering we were passing through on vacation, the rain check was of no value. Our request for a partial refund was denied.
The bottom line is, the aerial course is not well supervised and can be frustrating to children and...
Read more*Kid friendly, infant friendly-ish *edit: there is RV parking at the end of the gravel lot according to the owners!
This place is so much fun! The price seemed a little high, as you have to pay for each activity and not just an entrance fee, but their rain check policy is great! I only was able to use two of my paid activities when I visited but I've got rain checks for all i couldn't do! The alpine coaster is super fun, and on the chair ride up you can see mount rushmore! The alpine coaster can be as fast or slow as you feel comfortable. I went down like a snail in the left lane, as the right lane is for speed! The tube hill is super fun! They have 3 fast lanes and one kid lane thats not as steep and bumpy. The zipline is short but fun! The jump tower is an auto belay that lowers you down to the ground.
Those were the only activities we could do before the storm rolled in.
The weather changes fast in the black hills. If it is only raining the chair lift and zip line continue to operate. The tubing hill and alpine slide closes bc it gets too dangerous to ride down. If you're on the alpine slide when it starts to rain you are instructed to get out and walk your sled down the hill. If there is lightning everything closes. You get rainchecks for every activity you didn't get to do!
This place is very kid friendly. Check each individual activity for age, height and weight restrictions. Supposedly the chair lift is for "all ages" however in my opinion its definitely not safe to bring anyone under 3yo on it. I did not see a lactation room and there isn't anywhere private to nurse, but there are a few Adirondack chairs, picnic tables and bleachers under some shade so theres plenty of places to sit with Littles while the big kids go on...
Read moreHad a fantastic time at Rushmore Tramway on our recent family vacation. My daughter continues to rave about the great time there and we have so many great new stories/memories from our time there.
Attractions we chose to experience: • Alpine slide (always a great time) • Short/single-line zip-line • Aerial Adventure (this one was a lot of fun. More difficult courses definitely challenge you) • Tubing Hill (a first in summer for us) • Tower Jump
We're from Colorado and have many Alpine Slides "at our backdoor", and get excited to run them in other places. RTA's slide didn't disappoint. The concept of a tubing hill in summer is also a new one for us and it was a thrilling ride.
If doing multiple attractions plan for several hours. The aerial adventure portion can take a while depending on your physical ability and the amount of people on the course ahead of you. We weren't ever really "held-up" but did have a few occurrences of having to wait on a platform for the next section to clear. The rest of the attractions moved along pretty well and we didn't experience long waits for anything. I can't speak for the longer multi-line zip tour.
Fortunately, the weather was great for us. I can certainly see where poor weather (wet) shuts down most, if not all, of the attractions. It was very nice not doing another putt-putt course or similar run-of-the-mill vacation activity. Parking is free and right at the property. I'd recommend to those seeking a more "adventurous" activity while in the area. Individual activities seemed to range from $10-$25pp. We purchased the multipass at $90pp, but it included nearly everything, many...
