So disappointed in the direction this pier has taken. It is more a bar now than it is about fishing. Every August my husband and I go to the Outer Banks and one of the highlights of our trip was always Saturday night on the Avalon pier hanging out and fishing. We would load up a few beers in the cooler, grab our bait and poles and head to the pier where we would fish until after midnight and enjoy each other’s company, the sound of the surf and the view. There was a nice nostalgia to the non-commercialized atmosphere at that time. They allowed you to bring your own beer as long as it was in a covered container. Now they have fixed the pier up (and it does looks nice), but you are no longer allowed to bring your own drinks and they run you out at midnight when the store closes (you used to be able to fish all night if you wanted to - just didn’t have access to the store after midnight when they closed.). These days the Avalon pier is nothing more than another bar. Now you have to pay for their overpriced beer and listen to drunks and loud music while you are trying to fish and enjoy the serenity of the ocean. You can barely cast your line out from all the bar-goers walking up and down the pier “sightseeing” and being obnoxious. We are extremely disappointed that this what it’s become. We have made our last trip to the Avalon pier. If they wanted a bar, they should open a bar somewhere and leave the pier and the people who actually want...

My father and I came around 9AM to fish the pier, not many people were around just a small cluster of folks talking. We waited by the counter for someone to let us pay for access to the pier. No bell, or way to get anyone's attention we just stood there patiently. After 10 mins goes by we see the woman in the cluster of people chatting who clearly saw us come over to answer the phone. I guess we were invisible because she never acknowledged our presence. Not even a hold on ill be with you shortly. We decided to leave and go to another pier. Sad that one employee can ruin your entire experience. I would not recommend you waste your time here and just go to one of the other piers.
2019 Parking here is free if you are fishing and $10.00 if you want beach access. Fishing on the pier is $8 a person or $3 just to visit. Sad to report I only caught a small flounder and fishing was kind of poor overall but that's the name of the game some days are good and some aren't. There is a small arcade and a bar. We had some drink and...
