OBX Tortilleria Panaderia y Taqueria — Restaurant in Kill Devil Hills

We found this place by accident and were so happy we did. It is situated at the end of an unsuspecting strip mall but don't let that deter you. This isn't an american/Mexican joint. Your not gonna sit in this place and eat gallons of free chips and salsa but if you want real, talkin REAL mexican tacos this is the spot. No waiters, no frills just real Mexican food. The tortillas are made there and they are perfect. Fresh and not thick like a pancake. Light yet crispy and hold up to the filling without any sort of hull breach. They don't double up the tortillas and don't need to. The meats were on point and rival anything we've had in our Mexican travels. Lengua was tender and flavorful like the best roast beef you've ever had. The cabeza also was melt in your mouth and fatty in just that oh so perfect way. The barbacoa yields to the bite, juicy with that slight off the farm flavor that makes it unique. Last but not least the tripe, you could tell it had been cleaned properly and was cooked crisp and crunchy with just the right amount of seasoning. Dash of cilantro, onion and a twist of lime to top of em off and wow. They also have agua frescas like alot of taquerias do. However, the jamaica is made with the flower not powdered drink mix and unlike most places they actually give you a big gulp size cup of this heavenly nectar. They also make homemade Mexican breads and deserts there. Dont be afraid to try any of them.........we tried them all.

Update: May 11 2025. Decided to try again after a couple of years. Was excited bout the experience but quickly came back down. I just paid 4 dollars a taco and each had a spoonful of meat in it. The tortillas were not handmade. They fell apart and were not doubled up like you often find. Yes the little bit of food I got tasted good but I left 35 dollars poorer and I'm still hungry. Guess its back to tacobell lol. Disappointed and will probably not be spending my...

My husband and I were on a vacation trip and we decided to eat there. I asked for a melon water which was spoiled I told the person who served us that by the way he had a bad attitude all the time. He told me that he couldn't change it, that the water was fine and that no one had complained and that if he changed it, he would charge the regular price for the other water. I told him that there was no reason for me to say that since I didn't ask him for the money back, I just told him to give me another taste, to which he said no and continued with the bad attitude. On a future trip I will never buy anything there again and I hope better customer service in the end it was not even good the food was...

Despite the lack of sign on the front of the building making this stop easy to over look, DON’T. We walked up and the smell alone was amazing. The inside is small, with only two tables, but there are a few tables outside, and they do give you your food in to go boxes, so you can easily take it to your house or the beach! The food itself was aromatic, flavorful, and perfectly priced. The staff was friendly, quick, and the food was filling. Tacos are a little small so don’t get just one, but their quesadillas are amazing, and have a fantastic sauce on them! Don’t miss this...
