We decided last minute to book the afternoon snorkeling and night bio bay swim combination excursion with Paradise and I am SO glad we did (and that we didn't book with someone else or for another bay). First things first, if you're in Puerto Rico and renting a car (which really, you should do), then no matter where you are staying (we were in San Juan), it is absolutely worth the drive to La Parguera for the day -- we also visited the salt flats (awesome) and Yauco's public art (also awesome). La Parguera, though, is a charming attraction in and of itself, and next time we visit, we are planning to stay a night or two there rather than staying in San Juan the whole time. As for the excursion itself, I cannot recommend it enough. Between my companion and I, we've traveled a lot, and both agreed the bio bay swim was among the top 5 travel experiences of our lives. Many will point you to Mosquito Bay, because the bioluminescence is said to be the brightest there, but even under the best of circumstances, it is an absolute hassle to get there and you have to stay the night on the island. But the biggest reason I would suggest skipping Mosquito for La Parguera is that La Parguera is the only bio bay that you can get in the water and swim, and I will take that over only getting to kayak over slightly brighter bioluminescence every time. Nothing compares to actually being in the water and experiencing it firsthand and the glow is still bright and incredible. That said, I would absolutely recommend booking your trip with Paradise Scuba & Snorkeling Center! From start to finish, everyone we encountered was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and the value for the cost of the ticket is an absolute steal. There were only eight of us on the boat, which felt very intimate, and our ticket covered snorkeling equipment, an hour on the coral reef, a visit to a beautiful mangrove tree island to watch the sunset, and then another 45 minutes or so swimming in the bio bay, as well as a massive ice chest of soda, water, and beer and a couple of massive and delicious chicken empanadas for each of us. Everyone was great, especially Fabian and Louis who captained our boat. I can't recommend...
Read moreBooked snorkeling + bio bay here + although snorkeling had to be canceled due to rough waters we were still able to do the bio bay in the night time.
They did great with accommodating the inconvenience of the weather + recommended + got us in touch with other local charters at the Parguera to take us out to Cayo Caracoles (island/sand bar) the following morning which was very nice of them!
Back to the bio bay experience, it was one of the best experiences of my life! They take you out to the water a little before sunset + let you get out in the water until sundown (I had a little anxiety getting in bc it is the ocean + the waters were indeed rough about 7+ feet deep where we were, they do have floating devices if needed) once night completely falls, they take you into the bio bay which happens to be secluded + the waters are still, tour guide gives a very informative + interesting explanation of the history of the bay + science behind the luminescence, then you’re ready to jump in! Surprisingly I had NO anxiety jumping in the ocean while it was pitch black all around. The moon was completely hidden this night so it was even hard to see the person swimming right in front of you! No moon out made this experience 100x more fascinating though! The glow, the glistening when making any movement in the water was nothing I’ve ever seen before! It was so surreal!! It’s incredibly difficult to get this in pictures/video but tweaking the settings/exposures of the phone may help.
I made the drive here from Maunabo + if your visiting PR, wherever you are staying I 100% recommend you make the drive too + experience the bio bay at this location (they still allow people to swim in this bio while most other locations no longer allow it) not sure how much longer that will last but take advantage of it while...
Read moreOn our first trip to La Perguera and on my birthday my husband purchased the sunset bioluminescent excursion and it was an experience I will never forget. First of all the process of purchasing the excursion was seamless. We just walked in, immediately was greeted by staff. Asked what was available for that day. They mentioned sunset, swimming, bio bay and it sounded fun and romantic. They mentioned drinks and empanadas were included and we were sold. We received the waiver by email and electronically signed it. Showed up later on that day at 5:30 and we're escorted to the boat where we were given two empanadas. Not one, but TWO. (And the delicious kind with plenty of meat in every bite) The captains were informative and energetic. They played classic rock during the ride (GTA vibes for sure). There's floaties and snorkels. The water was perfectly cool and clear. You get to swim a bit before you get to the bay while waiting for the sun to set completely. Then they take you out to the bay where they explain what to do and look for in the water. It's hard to describe what looks like magic glitter in the water. Absolutely amazing. It is difficult to capture by camera but the crew gives you tips on how to try. Honestly it is an experience you will never forget and one that everyone should experience at least once in their life. Now the hilight of this excursion was the cooler full of medallas. Drinking and ice cold beer as you ride back to the dock was a great ending to an awesome experience. The folks at Paradise Scuba & Snorkeling Center really know how to show you...
