Highly recommend the bio bay tour with Alelí Tours! We booked here because we didn't want to do a kayaking tour and this one allowed us to swim in the water. Staying in San Juan, our drive was much longer to Lajas than if we'd gone to Fajardo, but it was so worth it!
We basically got a private boat tour with Ismael and our little family. Ismael speaks both English and Spanish, so we did a mix of both in talking with him. (He only takes up to 6 people in his boat, so you're guaranteed a small group) In the bay, my husband and I took turns jumping in the water and treading around. After swimming, Ismael took us to another part of the bay and showed us the fish darting around- super cool to see the quick flashes of light trails they made.
We went when the moon was in a waxing crescent phase (almost first quarter phase) and we saw the dinoflagellates very well. Ismael even said it was one of the best nights he'd...

While nature is always unpredictable and there is no guarantee for how bright the bioluminescence will be, we were lucky - the effect of the glowing bacteria was simply breathtaking, especially when you get to swim in it and see your skin glistening as the water runs along it, or when the hundreds of fish swimming in the water create a glow with every movement. We were the only boat in the bay towards the end, and really enjoyed the serenity of being in the bay in complete darkness with only the bioluminescence and the stars for light.
Ismael was a fantastic captain and guide, and I would recommend him and his tour services 100% to anyone coming to Puerto Rico.
Thank you for the experience...
Read moreThe tour of the bioluminescent bay with Captain Ismael's Aleli tours is the experience of a lifetime!!! We went three days after the new moon and the views of the bay were absolutely incredible. Our family drove from Dorado via Cabo Rojo and enjoyed some of the best beaches and seafood in Puerto Rico during the day. Our private chartered tour for 6 (we didn't have to share our boat with others) was scheduled for 7:30. Captain Ismael, who has a advanced degree in marine biology and who has lived in La Parguera for most of his life, was the perfect guide and made the experience very educational as well as just plain fun. Swimming in the bay under a beautiful star filled sky was mindblowing. If you are searching for the best tour...go with Captain Ismael he will make the experience...
